NIToday on Trans Day of Visibility, we recognize that transgender and gender-diverse people have existed across all cultures throughout history. From the Hijra in South Asia to Two-Spirit people in Indigenous North American communities, from the fa’afafine in Samoa to the gala priests of ancient Mesopotamia, gender diversity has always been part of the human experience . This day is about honoring that history, celebrating resilience, and affirming that trans people have always belonged and always will. Visibility is not just about being seen, it is about being respected, protected, and allowed to live with dignity.
At the same time, we cannot ignore the reality that the Trump administration has launched ongoing attacks on the trans community, targeting healthcare, rights, and basic recognition. These actions put lives at risk and create fear, especially for young people. Today is not only about celebration, it is a reminder that the fight for equality is far from over. I stand with the trans community today and every day, because dignity, safety, and freedom are fundamental rights.
