Anyone anticipating interactions like this at the upcoming family holiday gatherings? I work in 3 clinical roles and also do research as part of my job. 1) Emergency Medicine: as seen on TV (kind of...) - anyone and everyone who walks through or is wheeled through the doors of the emergency department. 2) Neurocritical Care: patients with neurological problems who are ill enough to need an intensive care unit. Some of the more common diagnoses include strokes, severe seizures, traumatic brain injuries, patients after brain or spine surgery, infectious or inflammatory conditions of the nervous system, and neuromuscular conditions requiring respiratory support. 3) Consults for Stroke Treatment: receive calls from doctors and APPs at ~30 hospitals about patients with potential stroke symptoms, mostly from emergency departments but some from admitted patients, to make diagnostic and treatment decisions (have you heard of โ€œclot bustersโ€ or clot removal procedures?) 4) Research: primarily related to a type of stroke - we test different โ€œbiomarkersโ€ from the patientsโ€™ blood to better understand harmful vs. beneficial inflammatory processes after the stroke (transcriptomics, extracellular vesicle, metabolomics, proteomics). #doctor #medicine #doctorgoals #doctordoctor #medicineman

Spatial biology techniques (especially spatial transcriptomics) are revolutionary because they allow researchers to map single-cell gene expression within tissue sections. This allows deeper understanding of the spatial context of gene expression in every cell within the tissue. Butโ€ฆthese techniques can be extremely expensive as they are still very niche. Moreover, the cost of specialised slides and the requirement for next-generation sequencing dramatically increases the cost of the full workflow. For example, the cost of a Visium HD slide (which can fit two tissue sections) including the NGS is ~โ‚ฌ15,000... so if you decide to run 4 samples for Visium HD you can easily expect an invoice of more than 30000โ‚ฌ๐Ÿ™ˆ On the other hand, the amount of data researchers get with such experiments is also quite impressive! #phd #lab #research #laboratorio #laboratory #technology
