Launched in 2014 on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, the Swachh Bharat Mission promised a nation where every road shines, every home has a toilet, and every corner is clean. Government data shows over ₹1.8 lakh crore spent, 11 crore toilets built, and India declared ODF Plus (Open Defecation Free) — yet ground reports expose a different story. Across states, half-built toilets, missing maintenance, and non-functional waste systems define the reality. Projects like Jaipur’s ₹175-crore ‘Pink Toilet’ lie unused, Chennai’s ₹1,000-crore clean-up drives fade into filth, and Maharashtra’s highway toilets remain invisible even to High Court judges. The numbers are dazzling — but accountability is missing. The posters shine, yet behind them is decay. The Indian government has launched the Dumpsite Remediation Accelerator Programme (DRAP) under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0, with a goal to clear roughly 8.8 crore tonnes of legacy landfill waste across India by September–October 2026. The initiative prioritises 214 major dumpsite locations across 202 urban local bodies, which together account for about 80% of the remaining legacy waste in the country. Financial support from the Centre includes ₹550 per tonne for remediation of the waste. Cities and local bodies will need to prepare micro-action plans for each site, stop fresh waste tipping at those sites, and reclaim the land for community or public use. Alongside DRAP, the Urban Investment Window (UiWIN) has been introduced to mobilise private and multilateral capital for urban infrastructure and waste-management projects. In short: the mission aims to make Indian cities cleaner by tackling some of the largest waste-sites, recovering land and improving the urban environment—aiming for full remediation by late 2026. #india #clean #cleanliness
