We were heading to South Africa.
I handed over my passport at the gate…
The agent flipped through it, paused, and said:
“You might not have enough blank pages.” 😳
I had two at the back.
She said South Africa might require three, like some other African countries. Cue panic while we research…
🛂 Here’s what I learned (the hard way) that you need to check before your next international trip (most people do not know #3!):
1️⃣ Check your expiration date
Some countries require your passport to be valid months after your trip. Asia, Africa, and South America often want six months from arrival. Most of Europe expects three months past departure. Even if your passport isn’t expired, you can still be denied entry or boarding if it’s cutting it close.
2️⃣ Check visa requirements
Rules change constantly. Just because you didn’t need a visa last time doesn’t mean you’re in the clear now. Some countries need advance applications. Some require a visa just to transit, including the U.S. And by the end of 2025, the EU will require most travelers to apply online before arrival. Always check, even for layovers.
3️⃣ Check how many blank pages you have
Some countries only need one, but others want two or even three completely blank pages. South Africa requires two consecutive blank visa pages. Botswana and Zambia need three. Even in parts of Europe and South America, you may be denied entry or boarding if your passport doesn’t have enough room for stamps or visas. A single stamp can make a page unusable.
💡Bonus pro tip:
I now put sticky notes on the last four pages of my passport that say “DO NOT STAMP.” Because agents don’t always stamp in order, and one random stamp could be the reason you miss a flight. This tiny fix gives me peace of mind every time I travel.

1. High heels 👠
Unless it’s a specific event — they’re just dead weight.
2. Hair dryer
Every hotel/Airbnb has one (and voltage issues abroad = headache).
3. “Just in case” outfits

4. Too many shoes
3 max: comfy walking, casual, one dressy.
5. Full makeup kit
Carry minis or just your daily basics.

Hotels provide them. Beach? Rent or carry a light one.
8. Too many jeans
Bulky & slow to dry. 1 is enough.
9. Books
Use Kindle or audiobooks — saves space instantly.

One crossbody + one optional = done.
11. Snacks overload
You’ll end up buying local food anyway.
12. Fancy outfits for every night
Reality: you’ll repeat your comfy favorites.
13. Full skincare shelf
Decant into travel bottles. Skin survives minimalism.
14. Umbrella (bulky one)
Buy local if needed or carry a compact one.
15. “Backup for backup” items
Overthinking = overpacking.
