If you’re a field athlete, a lot of what you do is similar to triple jump! Let me explain: At touchdown, the athlete has to: 1. Handle massive forces 2. Decelerate instantly 3. Maintain stiffness through the ankle, knee, and hip Then reverse direction forward and up That’s eccentric braking at high speed. Now think about a hard cut on the field: Same exact demand, you stop as fast as possible and redirect your energy in a different plane of movement The only difference is triple jumps in a straight line and field sports can be any direction possible This is why strength training, which is mainly concentric, needs to be in parallel with plyo sprints and change the direction work to get the most out of your training!

One of the highest long jumps I’ve ever seen from Will Claye was the result of a MASSIVE amount of dynamic leg strength. “Dynamic leg strength” was first introduced to me in 2016 when I was reading through some high jump documents that discussed the importance of the quadriceps and knees ability to function like a stiff spring in high jumpers. For high jumpers this is one of the strongest determinants for vertical lift, as being low and fast is what loads the leg, but if you can’t use the position it won’t matter much in the outcome of vertical lift. While long jump is determined largely by how fast you are in the final two steps, you also must be able to convert your horizontal momentum vertically to some extent. Considering Will is also an elite triple jumper, it makes sense why he’d have more vertical lift than other long jumpers. He’s seeing 13x body weight in the step phase of a max effort triple jump, meaning he can handle a more aggressive takeoff position in long jump. What is most impressive to me is how LOW he is during his penultimate step. It looks like he drops down a foot in the second to last stride prior to the takeoff leg hitting the ground. Not only that, but he throws his takeoff leg so far out in front, loading the ever living hell out of the quadriceps and knee. Most athletes can’t handle this position in general, let alone while running close to 11m/s.
