Five 18-year-old students were arrested and charged in connection with the incident, which local authorities and the victim's family have characterized as a devastating accident. The tragedy occurred during a long-running "junior-senior war" tradition where students target teachers' homes. Five students—Jayden Ryan Wallace, Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque, and Ariana Cruz—went to Hughes' home to unspool toilet paper on his trees.
Hughes anticipated the prank and was waiting to "catch" the students. When he went outside, the teenagers attempted to flee in two vehicles. Hughes tripped and fell into the roadway, where he was accidentally struck by a pickup truck driven by Wallace.
