On top of that, many of us have university lectures / exams in the evenings or even have to take their annual leave in order to negotiate and advocate at COP. Pakistan’s Oil Discovery: A Threat to the Environment? Pakistan recently discovered one of the world’s largest oil and gas reserves, potentially the fourth-largest in the world. While this discovery might seem like a financial boon for a country grappling with a $130.4 billion debt (source: Ministry of Finance), the environmental cost could be catastrophic. According to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), under the Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC) principle, developing nations like Pakistan are allowed more flexibility in their emissions under the Paris Agreement of 2015. However, the extraction and use of this new oil reserve could result in a huge rise in CO2 emissions, worsening the global climate crisis. If Pakistan proceeds with drilling, we can expect more melting glaciers, which will accelerate rising sea levels and threaten coastal areas. Increased emissions could also intensify wildfires, floods, and droughts, making life harder for vulnerable communities worldwide.
