Becoming a Sergeant is a social death sentence. You have to enforce standards on the same people you used to sham with and get out of taskings with. An officer has the “Sir” or “Ma’am” title to create some distance, but a Sergeant is leading people who know their secrets and their flaws. You have to change your old social life to be the NCO, and forcing your friends to work is a psychological battle most O1s can’t fathom.
2. SGTs have to lead with little room for autonomy.
A lot of what they do is highly scrutinized and prescriptive. Officers get to talk about “commander’s intent” and “vision,” but Sergeants live in the world of manuals and SOPs. Every move an E-5 makes is judged by a senior NCO looking over their shoulder. There is not much room to have one’s leadership style without higher involvement. Leading under that kind of visibility and pressure requires a mental toughness that isn’t taught in a classroom.
3. SGTs have to lead privates at work and at home (in the barracks).
This lifestyle doesn’t give them much space to decompress. When a Lieutenant’s day ends, they drive home and turn off the leadership. For a Sergeant in the barracks, the switch is always on. You are responsible for the 03:00 drama, the welfare checks, and the discipline of your Soldiers because you live ten feet away from them. Most officers are used to their privacy and couldn’t handle a leadership model that leaves no space to breathe..
