THFamily is Everything!
We’re even more blessed when, in addition to the family we’re born into, we find a family we’re “grown” into. This story honors Jimmy McHugh, who manages the Cape May Fudge Kitchen, and who alongside his twin brother, Sean, began a lifelong career as a happy 9 year old handing out free fudge samples in front of the store.
Jimmy proudly testifies to his 34 summers with us, “If you weren’t family, then you became family.”
The son of a US Coastguard, Jimmy grew up in Cape May. After school the twins attended CCD classes at Our Lady Star of the Sea, conveniently located behind Fudge Kitchen. They would stop in the store for free samples while waiting for class to start which is how their relationship with the Bogle Brothers began. After learning the art of cutting fudge and customer relations as samplers, the twins quickly graduated to little leprechauns making Irish Potatoes, (true story for another time) and officially started their sweet summer jobs in 1989 at 14 years old.
Jimmy went on to become one of our top full time fudge makers, intuitively following the same tried-and-true formula which has made The Original Fudge Kitchen achieve 50+ years of the greatest name in fudge.
Jimmy reflects on his career with great fondness. “Although it can be a grind, sometimes putting in 10 to 15 hour days,” he emphasized, “it is the fun and laughter and joking around with each other that keeps us going.”
After all, it’s been said, “Families are like fudge - mostly sweet with a few nuts!” It’s this camaraderie that defines The Original Fudge Kitchen atmosphere, a company where the majority of employees have been a part of this fudge legacy for 20-30+ years.

SA🎥 The 44m Benetti yacht DOMANI was disabled off the Washington coast on May 8. US Coastguard Pacific Northwest crews responded to the disabled yacht 45-miles northwest of Grays Harbor, Washington, with seven people aboard, which were all reported to be safe. The vessel couldn't close the transom door, and water had entered the stern. The flooding was brought under control. USCG Cutter ACTIVE arrived on the scene and began towing the vessel. The Coast Guard towed the vessel until reaching the Strait of Juan de Fuca, where a commercial arranged tug took over.

OPIn USA’s Maryland, the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed and fell into the water within a few minutes after a large container ship collided with one of its pillars. Shocking visuals of the collision and bridge collapse show an explosive fire on board the container ship as the bridge above shakes, breaks into pieces, and falls into the water taking the night traffic with it.
The incident happened at 01:30 ET (05:30 GMT) on Tuesday, 26 March.
Chief Kevin Cartwright, director of communications for the Baltimore City Fire Department confirmed to us that the bridge had been struck by a large vessel causing it to collapse into the Patapsco River, the BBC reported. As per initial reports, as many as 7 cars have fallen into the river.
The US Coastguard, Baltimore Fire Department, and other agencies are currently on site, carrying out rescue efforts.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge has a total length of 2632 metres and the water usually lies at a 56 metre depth. The main span of 1200 feet, around 366 metres is the longest continuous truss span in the world, as per reports.

TATim takes us on a tour of some of the emergency kit aboard The Kraken. 🛟

First up the EPIRB - this stands for Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon - and as Tim explains, it's essentially their big red button, for if they get into trouble. 🔴

One press of the button and a signal is sent to US Coastguard who will get some basic information about the boat, it's last known position, as well as the contact details of some one land associated with the crew. This means the US Coastguard can then liaise with the team and, if necessary, ask the nearest vessels to the rowing boat to divert and assist. 🚢

Next Tim give us a glimpse of the safety line. It's a three point line, one end is attached to a harness that the guys wear, another end is clipped to the white hand line strap that you can see in this picture, and then the other end is attached to a similar strap that runs the length of the deck called the 'jackstay'. They remain connected to the vessel at all times whilst out on deck. One of the worst things to happen is them becoming disconnected from their boat, so it's an important step in their safety protocol. 🪢

Back in the cabin Tim shows us the PLB - Personal Locator Beacon. This does the same thing ats the EPIRB, but is attached to the individual. This is there in case they DO become detached from the vessel, and so the coastguard will direct the rescue to the position of the person in the water, rather than the boat which may be floating away. 😳

As Tim mentions, they hope never to use any of their safety systems, but having them is vital to the success of the mission, and to their overall safety. 💪
