Hearts are breaking in the South Plains as the iconic Lubbock Feeders announces they will be shutting down operations… Manager and CEO Kyle Williams states that it is predominantly the impacts of the border shut down due to the New World screwworm that has led to this decision. That in combination with low Cattle inventory numbers and high prices of cattle have left the partners of Lubbock Feeders to come to this difficult decision. The New World screwworm is a fly that in its larval state will feast on live tissue, no matter what animal that includes livestock, wildlife, pets, and in rare cases, even humans . The @usdagov shut down the live import of animals coming into the United States back in November 2024. In February and May 2025 there were brief opening periods, however, as the New World screwworm positive cases were moving northward through Mexico from Panama, the USDA decided to shut down the border. It has not been open since May of last year. While no positive cases of the New World screwworm have been detected in the United States, it is obviously already having an economical impact on our beef systems here in the US. The lack of importing live animals is contributing to the high prices of cattle. The Lubbock Feeders feed yard has been around since 1955 and has fed over 5 million head of cattle. This iconic feed yard even had its own phrase to local residents who could smell the feed yard on certain days of the year, it “smells like money.” Even appearing in some music videos, the feed yard has been a long standing icon not just for the community but for the economy as well. #lubbock #feedyard #usda #agriculture #cattle

U.S. Representative Lois Frankel spoke about the issue Thursday at the Palm Beach County Food Bank in Lake Worth Beach. SNAP, which stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is the food stamp program many people rely on to put food on the table. Frankel says nearly three million Floridians, including 160,000 in Palm Beach County, could go hungry when the SNAP benefits end on November 1 if something isn't done. "This is a crisis that is preventable just to let you know and we're hoping the White House will use their authority to keep the money flowing. The money is there," U.S. Rep. Frankel said. While many federal employees have to work without pay during the federal government shutdown, others are being temporarily furloughed. As a result, local farmers are seeing a loss of services through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Rachel Bouressa of Bouressa Family Farm is a grazier in New London. She has about 100 cows and relies on a branch of the USDA for technical assistance with soil health and water quality. Workers with the Natural Resources Conservation Service were supposed to come to Bouressa's farm Wednesday to help with harvesting analysis. She said they're a key resource to keeping farms like hers successful, in addition to offering support. Bouressa worries about the longevity of the shutdown. The USDA even posted a notice on its website that it will not be updated until after the shutdown. A second branch of the USDA, the Farm Service Agency (FSA), is another resource that helps farmers with loan applications. Agents with the FSA have been furloughed, too. Bouressa worries about what will happen to some small farms, especially those who need money for next season. New this morning, an expanded recall on frozen pizzas that could potentially make you sick. That’s according to a notice from the USDA. The recall now includes two frozen pizzas sold at Walmart. Great Value’s Thin and stuffed Crust Chicken Bacon Ranch pizzas. According to the agency, the recall concerns a potential salmonella outbreak in meat and poultry products prepared with a previously recalled dry milk powder.
