It can be tough to differentiate coyotes from wolves sometimes, and you rarely see them side-by-side. However, combining trail camera footage allows us to create that scenario! Here are two different videos from the same trail camera, captured on the refuge last winter, layered together. Wolves are much larger. They’re taller, longer, and overall bulkier than coyotes. Also, note the prominence of the coyote’s big pointed ears and its leaner pointed snout. Wolves have blockier heads and more rounded ears. The Donald Trump administration has proposed four new rules that would roll back many protections under the ESA. Sources are from The US Fish and Wildlife Services and other federal agencies (read below)⬇️ Key changes include: 1. Eliminating the so-called “blanket rule” that automatically extended endangered‐level protections to species classified as threatened 2. Changing how “critical habitat” is designated—narrowing the definition so that habitats not currently occupied by a species might not qualify. 3. Allowing economic considerations (such as impacts on business, land use, mining, energy) to carry more weight in decisions about listings and habitat protection. 4. Placing greater emphasis on species‐specific protective rules rather than broad automatic protections, which may create delays in securing protections. The rules are being proposed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and other federal agencies, and the proposals are publicly documented. These changes revive and extend rollbacks that began in Trump’s first term and were partially reversed under the Joe Biden administration, making this a continuation of an identifiable policy trajectory. For species that are threatened (but not yet endangered), the removal of automatic protections could mean longer delays before full safeguards apply — which raises the risk that such species slide further toward endangered or extinct status. Broad habitat protections are a key component in recovery of species such as wolves. Narrowing the definition of “critical habitat” threatens that foundational element of conservation.
