SMThe vataana usli that tastes like home
Ingredients
1 cup white peas (vatana), soaked for 8 hours and boiled with salt
3 tbsp coconut oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
A pinch of hing
3–4 green chillies
2–3 dry red chillies
1 sprig curry leaves
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 cup freshly grated coconut
1 tbsp jaggery
Salt if needed
Method
Heat coconut oil and splutter mustard seeds. Add hing, green chillies, red chillies and curry leaves. Quickly mix in turmeric powder. Add the boiled white peas and stir well. Add grated coconut and jaggery. Cook on a medium flame for 5–6 minutes till the moisture reduces but the usli remains slightly moist. Taste and adjust salt if required.
Serve hot with dal and rice or chapati. Simple, comforting and loved by kids too.
