The Bill, if passed, will also ban trail hunting and effectively outlaw flushing with dogs for pest control, also known as ‘terrier work’. Today we say congratulations and good boy to K9 Bear! K9 Bear retired today after 8 years and 4 months of service! K9 Bear was born February 2nd, 2015 in Holland and was imported to North Carolina by Orchard Knoll Kennel. On April 20th, 2016, he was selected to become Middletown Police Department’s newest K9 recruit. He began the rigorous process of completing the K9 Academy where he graduated and was put into service on July 8, 2016. In 2019, K9 Bear took 1st place in Tracking and Narcotics in Mansfield Ohio during the USPCA Region 5 certifications. In 2022 he took 7th place overall in Middletown during the USPCA Region 5 certifications. In the following 8 years and 4 months of dedicated service, K9 Bear worked tirelessly and fearlessly, with his handler, Sgt Anthony Gibson. K9 Bear was utilized over 900 times, including over 400 free air sniffs and has also recovered large amounts of illegal drugs. K9 Bear was deployed on 261 tracks and 114 building and area searches resulting in 24 physical arrests and 66 incidents where subjects were located and detained without force. K9 Bear also completed countless meet and greets and demonstrations at schools and community events, and enjoyed hanging out with co-workers here at MPD especially if he could sneak a snack! Today we celebrate K9 Bear’s career and send him home with Sgt. Gibson to begin his well earned retirement. Good boy, Bear! Hims a good dog! Congratulations to Officer E.Finnvik and his PSD Mattis for passing their first ever aggression certification at the USPCA Region 12 Trials. Since completing their training over 2 years ago, the team could not pass the aggression portion of the certification. PSD Mattis is a high drive Mal and would not “Out” off of a bite suit. So earlier this month when I was down doing a training seminar, we addressed the issue and changed the methodology on how the dog was taught the “out” and these were the results. I tell all of my clients that dog training is about keeping an open mind, your most successful trainers are those that recognize that not all dogs are the same. What may work for one dog, won’t for another same as people in how we learn. So when selecting a trainer for your personal pet, service dog, working dog etc. be very mindful of the trainers that you select. Ask questions, you want what is best for you and your dog.
