Universal Genève introduces five new Cabriolets, one timeless idea: flip the case and transform the watch. First conceived in 1933 as the Ideo, the Cabriolet returns with its ingenious reversible case, protecting the dial while offering a canvas for creativity or a transparent window into the movement. Inside beats the new shaped UG-111, a manual-wind caliber measuring just 3mm thick, running at 3Hz with a 72-hour power reserve and modern shock resistance. The Prêt-à-Porter lineup spans from a contemporary steel model with a blue dial and nine-row bracelet to warm gold executions—whether set with diamonds and a bold red dial, paired with classic white, or elevated with a sleek black dial and full gold bracelet. Quando si parla di orologi reversibili, il primo nome che viene in mente è sempre il Reverso. Ma non è stato l’unico, e forse nemmeno il primo. Già nel 1914 un orologiaio, Louis van Bemmel, aveva brevettato l’idea di una cassa tonda capace di ribaltarsi su sé stessa per proteggere il quadrante dagli urti. Nel 1928, Universal Genève presenta il Cabriolet, tre anni prima del Reverso. Una cassa rettangolare inserita in un telaio più grande: sviti a ore 6, sfili, ruoti e rimetti in posizione. Un’idea troppo avanti per l’epoca, che resterà in produzione per poco e verrà oscurata dai modelli arrivati dopo. Link in bio. - When it comes to reversible watches, the first name that comes to mind is always Reverso. But it wasn’t the only one, and maybe not even the first. As early as 1914, watchmaker Louis van Bemmel patented the idea of a round case that could flip over to protect the dial from shocks. In 1928, Universal Genève presented the Cabriolet, three years before the Reverso. A rectangular case inserted into a larger frame: unscrew at 6 o’clock, slide out, rotate and put back in place. An idea too ahead of its time, which remained in production for only a short time and was overshadowed by later models. Sixty Seconds with the Universal Genève Compax 'Jumbo' While UG is probably best known for the Polerouter, the line of chronographs known as the 'Compax' is a close second - and for us, the ranks as one of the most desired models of vintage chronographs, full stop. This particular Compax dates to circa 1962, and features a 38mm case with a polished bezel, a signed crown, a beautiful, sunburst silver dial with applied indices, 'radial' sub registers, an outer blue tachymeter scale, a matching 'dauphine' handset, and UG's Calibre 130 hand-cranking chronograph movement within. The culmination of design details like the dynamic dial with the applied 'U' logo at 12:00, the gorgeous faceted case, and the elegant dauphine handset, leave us with a truly excellent package that represents phenomenal value next to its better know competitors in its day such as the Rolex Daytona and Heuer Carrera.
