Everyone plans the national parks… but the real magic is in between. Save this for your Utah road trip itinerary 🏜️👇 If you’re mapping out Southern Utah and only pinning the Mighty 5, you’re skipping some of the most unique, wide open, stops in the state. Right in the middle of Utah’s most famous parks are three destinations that are 100% worth the detour: 📍 Goblin Valley State Park A surreal desert playground filled with mushroom-shaped hoodoos that look straight out of another planet. You can roam freely (no set trails in the main valley), it’s dog friendly, and drone friendly with proper permits. It feels wild, cinematic, and way less crowded than the national parks. 📍 Dead Horse Point State Park: Towering canyon overlooks that rival the views inside Canyonlands National Park but with more breathing room. Dogs are allowed on most trails, and designated drone use makes this an unreal stop for creators and sunset lovers. 📍 Hanksville: A tiny desert basecamp perfectly positioned between everything. Open highways, dramatic desert backdrops, and easy access to adventure. And the best part? You’re surrounded by icons like: ✨ Arches National Park ✨ Capitol Reef National Park ✨ Canyonlands National Park If you want a Utah road trip that’s dog-friendly, drone-friendly, less crowded, and full of epic desert landscapes — this is the combo. Follow for more Utah travel guides, hidden gems, and Southern Utah itinerary ideas 🧡

Utah gems you didn’t know about The American Southwest is more than just national parks. If you’re road tripping through Utah, here are epic non-national park stops that are well worth the detour: 🌵 Goblin Valley State Park 🟢 Valley of Goblins Trail – ~1–3 miles depending on how much you explore, mostly flat. 🟢 No set trail through the hoodoos — you can wander freely. Great for families. 🟢 $20 per vehicle (state park fee). 📍 Forrest Gump Point 🟢 Roadside pull-off on US-163 — no hike required. 🟢 Best at sunrise for fewer cars + softer light. 🏜️ The Great Chamber 🟢 ~6–7 miles roundtrip in deep sand. Moderate difficulty due to terrain. 🟢 HIGH clearance vehicle required for trailhead access. 🚙 Factory Butte 🟢 Dirt roads range from passable to impassable after rain. Check conditions. 🟢 2WD can work in dry conditions, but clearance helps. 🌀 Belly of the Dragon 🟢 Very short walk (0.1–0.2 miles) through a manmade tunnel. 🟢 Sandy floor — can be muddy after storms and always slippery 🛻 Moki Dugway 🟢 3-mile graded gravel switchbacks. 🟢 Steep drop-offs, no guardrails. Not recommended for large RVs. 🏖️ Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park 🟢 Open sand play area — hiking is choose-your-own-adventure. 🟢 Sandboard + ATV rentals available nearby. 🟢 $15 per vehicle. 🌄 Dead Horse Point State Park (UT) 🟢 East Rim Trail – ~5 miles roundtrip, mostly easy with some elevation. 🟢 Shafer Canyon overlook is steps from parking. 🟢 $20 per vehicle.

It honestly kills us a little when people visit Utah and only see the national parks. Don’t get us wrong… the Mighty 5 are incredible. But some of the most surreal places in Utah aren’t inside a park gate at all. They’re hidden down dusty backroads, outside small desert towns, and sometimes you’ll have them completely to yourself. The first time we explored around Hanksville, we couldn’t believe landscapes like this existed. One minute you’re driving through the desert… and the next it looks like you landed on another planet. Places like 👇 📍 Moonscape Overlook – One of the wildest sunrises in Utah. Type Skyline Rim Overlook into Google Maps and follow the dirt road. 📍 Bentonite Hills – Painted hills that glow at sunrise and sunset. 📍 Factory Butte – A massive formation rising out of a Mars-like desert. 📍 Long Dong Silver – One of the most unique rock spires in Utah. 📍 Goblin Valley State Park – Thousands of hoodoos you can wander through. 📍 Dead Horse Point State Park – Canyon views that rival the national parks. And the crazy part? These spots barely scratch the surface of what Utah has to offer. If you’re planning a Utah trip, don’t just check off the national parks. Some of the most unforgettable places are the ones most people drive right past. 📌 Save this for your Utah road trip. Which one would you explore first?

✨ SAVE for your next Utah trip. I’m not saying the national parks aren’t incredible — they are. I am saying that if these places existed anywhere else, they’d probably be national parks. Utah’s state parks, national monuments, and lesser-known protected lands are just as striking, often less crowded, and some of my favorite places to explore. Don’t skip them when you’re planning your trip. Have you been to any of these? What did you think? 🤎 New here? I’m Mallory — a Southwest local based in Western Colorado.
