MAThe Problem: Invasive blue catfish are taking over the Chesapeake Bay. They can grow to massive sizes–more than 80 pounds–and eat 10% of their body weight daily. Their diet consists of many of our most popular commercial species including blue crabs and white perch.
A new Solution: The MAWS Act, (Mitigation Action and Waterman Support) which recently passed the U.S. House of Representatives!
Introduced by Maryland Rep. Sarah Elfreth, this bill:
🔹Establishes a pilot program to turn invasive catfish into high-quality pet food.
🔹Provides grants to manufacturers to build the necessary supply chains.
🔹Incentivizes local watermen to catch more blue catfish.
Getting control of blue catfish will take a coordinated effort. Department of Natural Resources scientists are studying the fish, while commercial watermen and anglers are helping the ecosystem by removing the invasive species. If approved, the MAWS Act will be another tool we can use to make progress in controlling this predator.
Close followers of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources may recognize the MAWS name. Since last year, DNR has been using MAWS (as a tongue-in-cheek reference to JAWS) to promote fishing for blue catfish. We’re excited to be sharing that name, which describes the gaping mouth that blue catfish use to devour their prey, with this federal effort to reduce the problems associated with the invasive species.

MDMeet Dr. Carys Mitchelmore, a professor at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (UMCES) and an expert in aquatic toxicology. Dr. Mitchelmore isn’t just looking at the water—she’s looking at the “fingerprints” we leave behind. From tracking E. coli to finding traces of your morning coffee (caffeine) and your favorite sweetener (sucralose), her team uses chemical markers to understand exactly where wastewater is coming from and how “fresh” it is. This is very important with helping to fix the Potomac.
Human Safety: Determining if water is safe for a weekend swim or for local fisheries.
Environmental Health: It’s not just about us! Dr. Mitchelmore is dedicated to protecting the entire ecosystem and the organisms that call it home.
Rapid Response: By collaborating with experts across disciplines, she’s helping turn raw data into real-world solutions for the state of Maryland.

FOReading about science is always interesting because there are infinitely more things to learn. This week I read these two articles about crabs. Over a 37 year study of blue crabs in the Rhode River, cannibalism was the only cause of predation, with none being attributed to fish. Not only is that unexpected, but it also helps us learn about how to maintain the fish industry. In the other article, that picture shows the animal I would least expect to be crossing the road in a large scale migration. The more you know!

TNRoxy Hazuka is an applied math major at Brown University. Last summer, she studied whether tides affect how many fish TNC scientists capture in beach seine surveys. There appears to be a correlation between higher tides and catching more fish, but it’s not clear yet how it affects species diversity. Thanks Roxy!

KEMaryland schools are getting creative in addressing the invasive blue catfish problem, adding “Catty Patty” sandwiches to lunch menus to help support the Chesapeake Bay 🍔
And the momentum is growing. Led by @reprobwittman (R-VA) and @repsarahelfreth (D-MD), the bipartisan MAWS Act cleared the House last month. The bill would help establish a strong market for harvested blue catfish, supporting local economies and gathering data that will support fisheries management in the Bay.
We look forward to working with our conservation partners to advance this priority in the Senate.
