After a four-day search operation in the Holi area, rescuers traced their bodies on 26 January, following treacherous conditions marked by heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures. 🙏🏼🕯️💔
What has moved many is the role of their pet dog, described in reports as a pitbull-type breed. The dog was found alive beside the younger boy’s body and reportedly refused to leave, surviving for days without food or water in sub-zero weather. Witnesses said the dog was initially defensive as teams approached, as if still trying to protect their companion.

On January 22, 2026, cousins Viksit Rana (19) and Piyush Kumar (13) from Chamba, Himachal Pradesh went towards the Bharmani Mata Temple, accompanied by their pet dog.
Ignoring worsening weather, they moved deeper into the snowbound terrain and were trapped by blizzards and sub-zero temperatures.
A final call on January 23 spoke of numb fingers and a desperate attempt to keep the younger boy alive. Rescue efforts were delayed by harsh conditions and on January 26, an IAF helicopter spotted a body in the snow, with their dog, Jonu, standing beside it.
For nearly three to four days, without food and in extreme cold, Jonu did not leave, initially resisting rescuers and stepping aside only when he sensed no harm. This was not training or aggression, but attachment, proof that while animals may not understand death, they understand belonging and loyalty can endure even after life doesn’t.
Stories like this force us to rethink easy solutions like removing or relocating dogs. If animals were inherently violent, would loyalty like this exist? Animal behaviour is a mirror, fear creates fear, cruelty creates defensiveness, neglect creates conflict. But care creates stories like this.
Removing dogs without addressing abandonment, irresponsible breeding, sterilisation, and coexistence is avoidance, not a solution. Dogs do not fail society; society fails dogs.
Humane coexistence is not softness, it is science and ethics. Before we label or blame, remember the one dog in the snow who harmed no one and stayed till the end. If that doesn’t make us rethink, the problem was never animals. It was us.

DEIn a heartbreaking incident from Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, two cousins lost their lives after getting trapped in a severe snowstorm during a trekking trip.
The victims, Viksit Rana (19) and Piyush Kumar (13), had gone trekking near the Bharmani Mata Temple area when sudden heavy snowfall cut them off from any escape route.
After they were reported missing, a massive rescue operation involving local police, SDRF, NDRF, Army and villagers was launched. Due to extreme weather and deep snow, it took four days for teams to locate them.
When rescuers finally reached the spot, they found both cousins dead and buried under snow. What stunned everyone was that Piyush’s pet pitbull was still alive, sitting beside his body, guarding him in sub-zero temperatures without food or water.
Rescue personnel said the dog initially acted protective and emotional, refusing to leave the body. The entire team reportedly became emotional seeing the animal’s loyalty.
Later, both bodies and the dog were airlifted by helicopter to Bharmour, and the dog was safely handed over to the family.
