Pulled from their debut album New Clear Days, the track climbs the charts worldwide — hitting #3 in the UK and breaking into the U.S. Top 40. But behind that quirky hook and unforgettable chorus? It’s not what people think. Songwriter David Fenton wrote it about heartbreak — sitting alone, staring at a photograph of a lost love, slowly unraveling in obsession and isolation. That strange phrase “turning Japanese” wasn’t literal… it was a metaphor for emotional overload, for becoming someone you don’t even recognize anymore. With its nervous energy, sharp guitars, and that iconic riff, the song became a staple of the early MTV era — one of the first videos in rotation and a defining moment of 80s culture.
