Step behind the lens with Shreyovi Mehta (@shreyovi_mehta) as she discusses her two awarded images in this year’s #WPY exhibition, ‘Height Advantage’ and ‘Wetland Spat’. Shreyovi is a young wildlife photographer from India, who was previously also awarded in the 10 Years and Under category of #WPY60 in 2024. Whilst on a trip to document sarus cranes along the outskirts of Delhi in the Dhanauri Wetlands, a habitat home to an array of wildlife, Sheryovi noticed a purple swamphen being charged at by a bronze-winged jacana. Acting quickly, Shreyovi captured two incredible images, both awarded in this year’s exhibition. 📸 ‘Height Advantage’ and ‘Wetland Spat’ are both highly commended in #WPY61's 10 Years and Under category. Coming back to @aucklandmuseum always reminds me of eating lunch on the steps on school trips 🤣 The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition features beautiful photography of wildlife, the environment and our impact on it. The stand out photos for me had to be the ones in the ‘Animals in their Environment’ section 😍 Also getting to see the only known Māori customary sail in existence (over 200 years old) in the Te Rā exhibition was a highlight of my visit. If you’re looking for something to do this week, get yourselves to the Auckland Museum and maybe have lunch on the steps too 👀🥳 #ad #aucklandmuseum #WPY #WPY59

This week, Philipp is sharing videos that provide an insight into the magical world he captures through his lens. Philipp is a photographer and a wildlife cameraman for TV productions. His work takes him to some of the most remote and untouched regions of the world, where he documents the behaviour of animals in their natural environment. Whether in the icy heights of the Alps or the dense forests of Scandinavia, his camera is his tool to tell the stories of nature. His photos and films aren’t created by chance, but are the result of months, often years, of patience. A mother polar bear feeds her young as they both bathe in the arctic summer sunlight. ☀️ #WPY57 photographer Martin Gregus @mywildlive, followed the daily habits of polar bears in this arctic region in Hudson Bay, Canada. As the bears became comfortable enough, Martin was able to linger close by. Keeping a respectful distance, he was near enough to hear the cubs suckling and purring, ‘an unbelievable sound, like little helicopters buzzing away.’ Young polar bears remain dependent on their mothers for two to three years to learn all the skills they need to survive alone in the wild. Cubs are born in winter and suckle for around two years getting nutrients from their mother's milk. Martin’s images received the ‘Rising Star Portfolio’ award, for 18-26 years old photographers demonstrating skill, vision and consistent quality of work. Charles Davis (Australia) uses the day’s last light to record a male emu and its young strolling across sand dunes formed over 120,000 years. Charles wanted to photograph emu chicks in the sand with just the adult’s legs included in the frame. He waited in the heat and sun for four days but never got the photo he planned to take. This image was “a beautiful surprise”. It was a moment taken in the last 10 minutes of light that day. #DYK about the Emu war?
