A new global study from the International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA) and Stantec highlights the rapid rise of ๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ ๐ฃ๐ผ๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ (๐๐ฃ๐ฅ) as a critical solution for urban water security.
The signals are clear:
๐น The global water reuse market is projected to grow by 74% from 2024 to 2030.
๐น 30+ countries are planning or piloting DPR systems
๐น Operational facilities in the United States, Singapore, and Namibia demonstrate that advanced reuse is safe, reliable, and scalable.
๐น Urbanization will have gone from less than 40% to nearly 70% in Global Cities between 2025 and 2050, driving over 2.5 billion additional people into major urban areas in the next 25 years.

๐ฎ๐ is the first state to approve full-scale DPR. The El Paso Advanced Water Purification Facility is set to open in 2026 and will be one of the largest DPR systems in North America.
๐บ๐ธ ๐๐ฎ๐น๐ถ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ป๐ถ๐ฎ, a global pioneer in water reuse, finalized comprehensive DPR regulations in 2023, establishing the first statewide framework for direct potable reuse. The Pure Water San Diego Program will soon provide 50% of the cityโs water supply through indirect and direct potable reuse.
๐บ๐ธ ๐๐น๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฎ is advancing DPR as part of statewide mandates to eliminate coastal wastewater discharges by 2032.
