#electrical_engineer_0612 Magnetic Balance Test in Transformer The Magnetic Balance Test is performed mainly on 3-phase power transformers to check the health of the core and magnetic circuit before commissioning or after repairs. It helps detect: Core faults Shorted laminations Core bolt insulation failure Uneven magnetic flux distribution Inter-turn winding faults (indirectly) 🔍 Why It Is Done In a 3-phase transformer, the magnetic flux in the core should distribute symmetrically. If there is any defect in the magnetic circuit, the voltage induced in other phases will be abnormal. The test verifies: Magnetic symmetry Core continuity Absence of internal short circuits ⚙️ How the Test is Performed Test Setup: Keep LV side open Apply single-phase voltage (usually 230V AC) to one phase of the HV winding Measure induced voltages in other two HV phases The test is repeated for all three phases. 🧪 Step-by-Step Procedure Keep transformer isolated. Keep one winding open (usually LV). Apply low AC voltage (≈ 230V) across: R–N Measure voltage across: Y–N B–N Repeat for: Y phase excitation B phase excitation 📊 Expected Results For a healthy transformer: The applied phase will show full applied voltage. The other two phases will show induced voltages. The induced voltages should be nearly equal. Sum of induced voltages ≈ Applied voltage (approximate relation) Example (if 230V applied on R): R–N = 230V Y–N ≈ 100–140V B–N ≈ 100–140V Small variation is acceptable. 🚨 Abnormal Conditions Indicated By Observation Possible Fault Very low voltage in one phase Core short or inter-turn fault Large imbalance between phases Magnetic circuit problem No induced voltage Open winding Very high induced voltage Core insulation failure 📌 Important Notes Performed without load Only low voltage is used Mostly applicable to core-type transformers Not a ratio test 🏭 When Is It Done? Before commissioning After transportation After major repair During condition assessment
