DGMeet Keisha Bruiners. She is 20 years old and learning how to code for the first time with @wethinkcode_ at a TVET college in Riversdale, a rural town between Cape Town and George. She is among 30 students, primarily from disadvantaged backgrounds, who are studying towards a software engineering diploma.
WeThinkCode_ is a South African tuition-free software engineering academy, tackling the technical skills shortage and youth unemployment. By recruiting talented youth, often with no prior coding experience, and training them in market-relevant programming and work-readiness skills, WeThinkCode_ equips graduates to secure jobs in tech.
Recently, they launched a pilot programme with South Cape TVET College in Riversdale to train 30 young people in software engineering, bringing their industry-aligned curriculum to a rural campus for the first time. Over 16 months, students like Keisha will gain the digital skills needed to access opportunities in the tech sector — a field that can be especially difficult to break into when you come from a low-income or rural setting.
This pilot is testing the integration of an industry-aligned digital training model with public TVET colleges, a public-private partnership supported by DGMT. By expanding access to industry-aligned training in rural areas, this partnership is helping create pathways to employment and equip young people with market-relevant programming skills.
