Meals for Titanic passengers were included in their ticket price. However, the quality and variety of food varied drastically based on the class of the ticket, which represented a massive financial investment for the travelers of that time. Meal Costs & Ticket Value by Class While standard meals were “free” once on board, the cost was reflected in the high price of the ocean fare. First Class: Tickets ranged from $150 to $4,350 (approx. $4,700 to $130,000 today). For those choosing to dine at the exclusive À La Carte Restaurant instead of the main dining saloon, individual meals had specific costs: Breakfast: 3 shillings (~$7.20 / ₹600 today). Lunch: 3 shillings 6 pence (~$8.40 / ₹700 today). Dinner: 5 shillings (~$12.00 / ₹1,000 today). Passengers who committed to eating all meals in the private restaurant received a rebate of £3 to £5 (~$144 to $240 today) on their ticket price. Second Class: Tickets cost roughly $60 (approx. $1,900 today). Food was plentiful and high quality, often compared to first-class standards on other ships of the era. Third Class (Steerage): Tickets cost between $15 and $40 (approx. $450 to $1,200 today). Unlike many ships of the time where third-class passengers had to bring their own food, the Titanic provided three full meals a day, which was considered a luxury for many immigrants. The Massive Food Provision Budget To feed the ~2,200 people on board for the week-long journey, the Titanic Belfast and other records show a massive inventory was loaded: Meat & Fish: 75,000 lbs of meat and 11,000 lbs of fresh fish.🐠 Dairy: 40,000 eggs, 6,000 lbs of butter, and 1,500 gallons of milk. Vegetables & Fruit: 40 tons of potatoes, 36,000 apples, and 7,000 heads of lettuce. Drinks: 20,000 bottles of beer, 15,000 bottles of mineral water, and 1,500 bottles of wine. Historical Value Today The “cost” of these meals lives on through artifacts. A surviving First-Class Dinner Menu from the night of April 14, 1912, sold at auction for approximately £83,000 ($102,000 / ~₹85 lakh) in 2023. #viral #trending #shorts #instagram #instagood

Elegant dinner on board the Titanic?! Not exactly! This is Moshulu (“one who fears not”) permanently moored on the Delaware River in Philadelphia, open for indoor and outdoor dining and cocktails, not to mention weddings. It is the world’s oldest and largest four masted ship still afloat. Originally built in Scotland in 1904 as a cargo ship, seized by the US during WWl. First dinner on our 3 day Hampton Jitney tour of Philly, March 10, 2026.

The Titanic Experience The Titanic Experience is the world’s most authentic retelling of the iconic story. Isidor and Ida Straus One of the most popular love stories was that of the owners of Macy’s Department Store, New York, Mr Isidor Straus, and his wife, Ida, who travelled back from winter in Europe onboard Titanic. Once it was clear the ship was sinking, Ida refused to leave Isidor and would not get into a lifeboat without him, apparently stating, "I will not be separated from my husband. As we have lived, so will we die, together.” Although Isidor was offered a seat in a lifeboat to accompany Ida, he refused seating while there were still women and children aboard. Ida also reportedly gave her maid, Ellen, her fur coat as she would no longer need it, and insisted that she got on a lifeboat. A memorial plaque for them can be seen today at the 34th Street Memorial Entrance of Macy's Herald Square. JJ Astor and wife Madeleine There was also 13 known honeymooning couples on board Titanic’s maiden voyage, including J.J Astor, owner of Waldorf Astoria Hotel (aged 47), and his nineteen year old wife. According to the New York Times Astor “put up and owned more hotels and skyscrapers than any other New Yorker”, he was estimated to be worth as much as $200 million and was the richest man on Titanic as well as Nelle Stevenson & John Pillsbury Snyder, a relative of the Pillsbury Company’s founder! Kate Florence Philips and Henry Morley Another favourite is the story of the ‘Love of the Sea’ necklace, which may have been the inspiration behind the ‘Heart of the Ocean’ storyline. Kate Florence Philips (aged 19) boarded Titanic with the owner of the shop she worked for, Henry Morley - 20 years her senior with a wife and child! They left for America to elope and start a new life together. Henry gave her a sapphire diamond necklace set in platinum, called the ‘Love of the Sea’, which she wore proudly on board Titanic. Henry did not survive the tragedy, however, Kate got onboard a lifeboat and brought the necklace with her. She gave birth to Henry’s daughter, Ellen, a few months later.
