Windshear refers to a sudden and dramatic change in wind speed and/or direction over a relatively short distance or period of time. It can occur horizontally or vertically and is commonly associated with weather phenomena like thunderstorms, cold fronts, jet streams, or terrain-induced turbulence. It could be hazardous during takeoff and landing and low altitude. . . . #windshear #aviation #pilot #pilotamireh #pilotlife #aviationreels #reelsaviation #reelsinstagram #landing #goaround #indigoairlines #badweather #weathering #aviationdaily #landingvideo #aviationvideo #natgeo #natgeotravel #indigo #mumbai #delhi #indianairlines

✈️ What is Windshear? Windshear is a sudden change in wind speed or direction over a short distance in the atmosphere. It can happen horizontally or vertically and is especially dangerous during takeoff and landing when an aircraft is close to the ground. When an airplane encounters windshear, the smooth flow of air over the wings is disrupted. This can cause a sudden loss or gain of airspeed and lift, making the aircraft difficult to control. For example, a plane approaching the runway might suddenly lose lift and begin to descend faster than expected. Windshear is often caused by thunderstorms, microbursts, or temperature changes in the atmosphere. Among these, microbursts are the most dangerous because they create powerful downward and outward winds. Modern aircraft like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 are equipped with systems that warn pilots of windshear. Pilots are also trained to respond quickly by increasing thrust and adjusting the aircraft’s angle. 🛫 In simple terms, windshear is an invisible change in wind that can affect an aircraft’s performance, but with proper training and technology, it is handled safely. #aviationeducation #aviation #avgeek #pilot #aviationlovers

In the cockpit, certain warnings demand immediate action—they’re designed to cut through everything and trigger a trained response. • Terrain (“PULL UP”) → Pilots execute an escape maneuver immediately: full thrust, pitch up, and climb to avoid terrain. No delay, no hesitation. • Stall Warning → The priority is to reduce the angle of attack: nose down, add power, and recover smooth airflow over the wings. • Windshear Warning → Pilots apply maximum thrust and follow escape guidance, maintaining a safe pitch to fly out of unstable air near the ground. These alerts aren’t just sounds—they’re tied to strict procedures practiced over and over in simulators. Quick recognition and immediate response are what keep flights safe in critical moments. 📸: @niceaviation #AviationSafety #PilotTraining #Windshear #StallRecovery #AvGeek

Severe wind shear encounter during final approach. As the aircraft nears the runway, a sudden shift in wind speed and direction causes a rapid loss of airspeed and lift. Notice the aggressive control inputs, asymmetric wing loading, and brief roll as the pilot fights to maintain alignment and stability. Wind shear is especially critical during the flare and touchdown phase, where there is minimal margin for error. In this moment, precise thrust adjustments, rudder control, and aileron inputs are essential to counter the gust front and prevent drift or potential wing strike. This scenario highlights the importance of wind shear detection systems, strict stabilized approach criteria, and advanced pilot training for operations in adverse weather conditions. 🎥: withskyair #aviation #windshear #pilotlife #aviationsafety #landing

Instant IAS Drop: Lift is a function of Indicated Airspeed (IAS), not ground speed. A sudden tailwind gust during rotation effectively "steals" airflow from the wings, causing an immediate drop in IAS and a catastrophic loss of lift. Induced Drag Surge: At a high Angle of Attack (AoA) during rotation, the aircraft is already in a high-drag configuration. As the lift vector collapses and the airframe begins to sink, the induced drag increases sharply, making it incredibly difficult for the engines to "pull" the aircraft out of the sink rate. The Energy Trade-off: To recover, the crew must manage a delicate trade-off: lowering the pitch to regain airspeed while being dangerously close to the runway surface. Cockpit Execution Notice the zero visible roll deviation. Maintaining lateral stability in such a high-workload, low-speed regime requires aggressive and precise rudder coordination. Any slip or skid here could have resulted in a wingtip strike.FW_LastMinute The crew's ability to maintain a symmetrical flight path while the airframe settled back toward the pavement saved the aircraft. Energy management isn't just a concept—it's what keeps 270 tons of aluminum in the air when the environment turns against you. Follow me for more! When a heavy quad-jet like the A340 is at the point of rotation, it is operating within a razor-thin performance margin. The Zurich incident is a textbook case of how a sudden shift in Relative Wind can compromise an entire departure profile. #A340 #Edelweiss #Aerodynamics #FlightPhysics #Windshear Edelweiss A340 take off gone wrong!

Microbursts — the silent killers of the sky. ✈️ They don’t come with lightning or heavy turbulence like a storm cell. In fact, they’re invisible to the naked eye, but their effects on an aircraft can be catastrophic within seconds — especially during takeoff or final approach, when you're low, slow, and vulnerable. So, what exactly is a microburst? A microburst is an intense, localized downdraft (sinking air) produced by a thunderstorm or convective cloud. This air plummets to the ground, hits the surface, and then fans out in all directions at high speed — often over 100 knots. The total affected area is typically less than 4 km, but the vertical wind component is where things get deadly. Why do they form? ☁️ High-level thunderstorms pull in dry air. When rain begins to fall, some of it evaporates before reaching the ground — a process called virga. 💧 This evaporation cools the air drastically, making it heavier than the surrounding atmosphere. ⬇️ That dense air sinks violently (up to 6,000 ft/min), creating the microburst. 🌪️ Upon impact with the ground, it spreads out radially, causing rapid shifts in wind direction and velocity. From a pilot’s perspective: ➡️ You enter with a headwind — suddenly the aircraft lifts, and your airspeed increases. ➡️ Then you hit the core of the downdraft — vertical speed drops, lift deteriorates. ➡️ Seconds later, it transitions into a tailwind — airspeed crashes, sink rate increases, and there's often no time or altitude left to recover. The impact? This rapid change in relative airflow can lead to premature descent, hard landings, or in the worst cases — controlled flight into terrain. Unlike general wind shear (a more steady gradient of wind change), microbursts are vertical and explosive. Their intensity is unpredictable, and even full thrust may not be enough if the aircraft is too low. Real-life lessons? The 1985 crash of Delta Flight 191 was a tragic wake-up call. It encountered a microburst on approach into DFW, and despite the crew’s efforts, the aircraft hit the ground short of the runway. #Microburst #WindShear #AviationWeather #PilotTraining #GoAround Follow me 👉🏻 @prath1001 for more ✈️!

Windshear on short final 🌪️✈️ Follow @etopsaviation for more aviation content One of the most critical moments in flight — just seconds before touchdown. On approach, everything is stabilized… until it isn’t. A sudden change in wind speed and direction can cause a rapid loss of airspeed and lift. The aircraft drops. The margin disappears. Instant reaction is key. Thrust levers forward. Pitch adjusted. Stabilize — or go around. Windshear isn’t something you “fight” casually — it’s something pilots are trained for repeatedly in simulators. Because close to the ground, there’s very little time to correct. What looks intense from the outside is actually controlled response under pressure. Training, awareness, and quick decision-making — that’s what keeps it safe. ✈️
