Maya Angelou (1928–2014) was an American poet, author, and civil rights activist whose voice reshaped literature and the global conversation about race, identity, and dignity.
Born Marguerite Annie Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, she endured a difficult childhood that included trauma and years of selective mutism. During that silence, she immersed herself in literature, an experience that later shaped her powerful writing voice.
Angelou rose to international prominence with her groundbreaking 1969 memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, one of the first autobiographies by a Black woman to reach a wide mainstream audience.
The book courageously explored racism, trauma, resilience, and the power of self-expression.
Beyond literature, she was deeply involved in the Civil Rights Movement, working with leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
Her work as a writer, performer, and activist made her one of the most influential voices of the 20th century.
