@alice_odessa stumbled upon the Woolworth Building, NYC’s hidden gem! 🏙️✨ The Woolworth Building is one of New York City’s most iconic skyscrapers, rising 792 feet tall in Lower Manhattan and finished in 1913, making it the tallest building in the world when it opened. Designed by architect Cass Gilbert in a dramatic neo‑Gothic style, it was nicknamed the “Cathedral of Commerce” and became a symbol of NYC’s rise as a global city. Though the lobby isn’t usually open to the public now, seeing its ornate facade, historic details and place in the skyline is a must for travelers exploring Lower Manhattan and the history of early skyscrapers. Tag someone who needs to visit this landmark! 🫶🏻✨

Good morning, New Yorkers ☀️🏙️ New York City’s architecture is unlike anywhere else in the world — it’s a living timeline where Beaux-Arts elegance, Art Deco glamour, and modern glass towers all stand side by side. Every block tells a story of ambition, innovation, and design that shaped the skyline we know today. Here are 5 iconic spots from my video ⬇️ 1️⃣ New York Stock Exchange Built in 1903 and designed by architect George B. Post, this Beaux-Arts masterpiece symbolizes the power of global finance. Its grand façade with Corinthian columns represents strength and stability, while the building became the heart of Wall Street and the U.S. economy. 📍 11 Wall St 2️⃣ Chrysler Building Completed in 1930 and designed by William Van Alen, this Art Deco icon was once the tallest building in the world. Known for its stainless steel crown and eagle gargoyles, it represents the bold ambition of the early 20th century. 📍 405 Lexington Ave 3️⃣ Fountains of Truth & Justice (NYPL) Installed in 1919 in front of the New York Public Library, these fountains were designed by sculptor Frederick MacMonnies. They symbolize the core values of knowledge and fairness, perfectly complementing the Beaux-Arts library behind them. 📍 476 5th Ave 4️⃣ Grand Central Terminal Opened in 1913 and designed by Reed & Stem with Warren & Wetmore, this Beaux-Arts landmark is one of the most beautiful transit hubs in the world. From its celestial ceiling to its grand staircases, it’s a masterpiece of both engineering and design. 📍 89 E 42nd St 5️⃣ Cartier Fifth Avenue Originally built in 1905 as a mansion for Morton F. Plant, this elegant building became Cartier’s flagship store in 1917. The story goes it was exchanged for a pearl necklace — making it one of NYC’s most iconic luxury addresses. 📍 653 5th Ave ✅Save this post with these must-see NYC landmarks 📌 and share it with someone you want to explore New York with 💛✨ • • • Follow @alexanewyorkcity for more travel inspiration • • • #newyorknewyork #newyork #newyorkcity #manhattan #nyc

What if I told you this sign was lifted into the Manhattan skyline at the worst possible moment in history… and never came down? Essex House New York began construction the day after Black Tuesday — October 29, 1929 — when the Wall Street Crash sent the world into economic collapse. Built in the optimism of the Roaring Twenties but opened in 1931 at the height of the Great Depression, the original owners eventually went bankrupt. The U.S. Government’s Reconstruction Finance Corporation stepped in. Yet in 1932, against all odds, the bold red neon “ESSEX HOUSE” sign was hoisted onto the roof — and it has glowed over Central Park ever since. Over nearly a century, that sign has watched legends check in, including Elizabeth Taylor, The Beatles, Bob Marley, David Bowie and Richard Nixon. From financial collapse to cultural landmark, this building mirrors New York itself — resilient, dramatic, impossible to ignore. Today, nearly a century later, @jwmessexhouse stands fully restored as a five-star Art Deco landmark — blending historic grandeur with modern luxury suites overlooking Central Park. The neon still glows. The skyline still frames it. And the story is still being written. #newyorkcity #nychistory #visitnyc #nyc #manhattan

The Chrysler Building opened in 1930, and it’s one of the cleanest examples of a corporate era turning into a permanent piece of the skyline. A lot of people know the crown, but the real move was the spire. It was a steel structure assembled inside the tower and then hoisted into place near the end, which is how Chrysler jumped ahead in the height race and held the title for roughly a year. The materials are a big part of why it still reads “new” up top. The crown and spire are stainless steel, chosen to stay bright and resist corrosion, so the building keeps that crisp metallic look instead of weathering into a dull gray. And the detail work is unusually specific. The 61st floor corner eagles echo late 1920s Chrysler hood ornaments. The 31st floor corner pieces reference 1929 Chrysler radiator caps. That’s not vague Art Deco, it’s the car company stamped into the façade. There’s also a personal rivalry baked into the story. Van Alen’s former partner, Craig Severance, was tied to the Manhattan Company Building at 40 Wall Street, so this wasn’t just tower vs tower. It was architect vs architect too. Finish it inside and it still holds up. The lobby is one of the most intact Art Deco interiors in Midtown, with red Moroccan marble, heavy metalwork, and a ceiling mural that keeps the original transportation and industry theme. In 1893, the Waldorf Hotel was constructed at the corner of 33rd Street and Fifth Avenue by William Waldorf Astor. John Jacob Astor IV, his cousin and competitor, built a taller hotel next door four years later. The two feuding relatives eventually reached a truce and connected their buildings with a 300-foot marble corridor known as Peacock Alley, resulting in the birth of the Waldorf-Astoria. #waldorfastoria #nychistory #NYCHistory
