NAThe American alligator is the default apex predator of every man-made lake in Southwest Florida, and most residents have no working understanding of the system they are living inside.
Alligator mississippiensis colonizes new water bodies within a few years of construction. The retention ponds, golf course lakes, and ornamental water features that define gated community design across Collier and Lee counties are functional stormwater infrastructure required by Florida drainage code, and they are biologically continuous with the surrounding wetland system. Bass, bluegill, and tilapia populate these ponds within a single growing season. Alligators follow the fish. The colonization is the predictable outcome of building artificial wetlands inside a subtropical floodplain.
Naples sits at the western edge of the Big Cypress watershed. The surficial aquifer runs shallow, the water table is high, and every depression that holds standing water connects to the larger system. An alligator in a residential lake in Pelican Bay, Lely Resort, or Fiddler's Creek arrived through hydrological connectivity. It walked or swam in along the same water path the fish did.
Population density is higher than most residents realize. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission estimates more than 1.3 million alligators statewide, with the highest density in the southern peninsula. A single residential lake of moderate size will typically support multiple animals, with larger bulls displacing smaller individuals into adjacent ponds as the dry season concentrates water.
The luxury layer is built directly on top of this. Manicured lawns end at the waterline. Walking paths and stroller routes run within feet of active alligator habitat. Sightings happen because the community was constructed inside the ecosystem.
Most homeowners think of the lake as an amenity. The alligator thinks of it as territory. The territorial claim predates the amenity claim by several thousand years.
Naples does not stop at the seawall. The water connects everything. That is the actual map.
