I'm hesitant to give writing advice, because I'm not an expert, and what works well for one person may not work well for another. Having said that, this song reminds me of the 'layering' process of how I approach each draft. You don't have to untangle the thread all at once. It's okay to go slow and focus on one element at a time. 🩷 #writingprocess #authortok #writertok

If you’ve followed this writing advice in the past, it’s probably why you’re still stuck now: (comment PLOT and I’ll send you the link to the toolkit that fixes it) Most writers aren’t stuck because they lack experience. It’s because most common writing advice sounds helpful, but isn’t. Here are the biggest offenders: ❌ “Just start writing and see where it goes.” This leads straight to 20,000 words and nowhere to go next. ❌ “Your first draft should be messy.” Messy prose is fine. Messy plotting is how you end up rewriting forever. ❌ “You’ll figure out the world/characters/plot as you go.” This is how most writers end up contradicting themselves and losing momentum. ❌ “You’ll get clarity eventually.” No you won’t. Not without structure. None of these fix the real problem: 👉 Your story doesn’t have a clear plot roadmap yet. And without one, writing feels like wandering in fog: discouraging, slow, and way more overwhelming than it needs to be. What actually gets you unstuck is simple: A clean, step-by-step outline that shows you: ✅ what your story is about ✅ where it’s going ✅and how each scene moves the plot forward That’s exactly what the Plotting Toolkit gives you. It’s the framework I use to help new and overwhelmed writers create a full plot in hours instead of months. Comment PLOT and I’ll send you the link to check it out. Happy writing!

📖WRITING ADVICE IN CAPTION📖 I’ve hit the NYT list twice, traditionally published 3 series, 1 novella, and 1 standalone SFF, for a total of 9.5 books and I no longer keep track of my word count when I’m in the drafting stage, even while on tight deadlines 🤯 My old process was tried and true: 1,000 words a day or bust. These days, I’m lucky to hit 400 a day. No joke. Writing is different with two kids, homeschooling, + working another job (see later post for why I’m not full time writing anymore these days). Even with time cut short to spend on my WIP, I DON’T TRACK WORD COUNTS OR SET A DAILY WORD COUNT GOAL. ✨My goal is this: Did writing FEEL right today? Seriously, that’s my goal. Did I write from the heart that day? Did I actually enjoy the process of it? The words might not all be saveable, but did I walk away feeling like I’d accomplished one tiny little meaningful thing in the scene (character building, world building, realizing a plot hole, adding in some fun prose)? These are the things I do keep track of on the daily. If I write with my heart, I get a check mark on my calendar for the day. If I don’t, and I’m slugging along painfully…I walk away. Move on. No check. Simple goal, but I find it’s less defeating than realizing I hammered out 1,000 words that I hate 🤷‍♀️ And these days, I need all the JOY I can get in my drafting phase. Writing doesn’t have to be painful or so “goal oriented” that you lose the art of it! Do you track word counts while drafting? Do you have daily writing goals??
