NOXPT (eXpress Passenger Train) may be old but still powering through this day
The design of the train may look familiar to people from the UK as the design is based on the Intercity 125 HST. The train does have a slightly lower top speed of 160km/h instead of 200km/h but it rarely reaches 160 because of the very average track quality in regional Australia.
The XPT service operated by NSW Trainlink isn’t always reliable with constant delays. On the day of filming, the train arrived in Sydney 130 minutes late. What I’ve heard from the train crew is that the train had a mechanical issue which leads me to explain the next problem. There aren’t enough spare trains in the fleet and the train is often overworked leading to reliability issues. The XPT will soon be replaced by a new train which has been delayed for many years and I am not sure when it will enter service. All the negative parts aside, this service is essential for the towns that the train passes through and the XPT isn’t too bad. It’s just the ride is long and barely has any phone signal along the journey.
