SHThe nightingale is my most favourite songster. A secretive and shy brown robin sized warbler their populations have declined by 90 percent in some areas in recent years.
A deeply sad loss due to declining scrub and woodland habitat among other factors. Intensified grazing by deer hasn't helped either, there are far too many of those and only the introduction of lynx will sort that out!
They arrive mid April and will sing until late May, often to attract females and establish their breeding territories.
Nightingales return to Africa once their young are reared late summer.
To witness their song is one of the most joyful uplifting memories nature can provide and it's always been my most loved.
