With colorwork projects things can start to feel a little chaotic if you’re not set up comfortably. Managing multiple strands of yarn can really make or break your experience, so a bit of preparation goes a long way. I used to spend so much time stopping mid-row to untangle yarn, and it completely pulled me out of the flow of the project. Switching to these circular bobbins made a huge difference for me, especially when I pair them with a bobbin holder so everything stays in place and feeds smoothly as I crochet. It keeps things calmer and lets me focus on the crocheting instead of fighting the yarn. If you want to see exactly how I set things up, I’ve got a video that walks through my whole process. It’s linked in this weeks blog post if you want a closer look.

One of my favourite colour tricks for crochet 🎨 When I’m not sure where to start with colours, I go to my wardrobe. I pick something I love wearing and match my yarns to it. That way I know before I even start that my finished piece is going to work with my clothes. It sounds simple — but it takes all the guesswork out of it. If colour mixing feels tricky, comment SHADES and I’ll send you a short video guide with two of my favourite tips 💛

Comment 'INTARSIA' and I'll send you my color change tutorial video! This week’s CAL tip is all about knowing when to carry yarn and when to leave it. One of the most common intarsia hiccups is carrying yarn too far across the back, or cutting it too often and ending up with way more ends than you need. There isn’t one rule that works for every situation, but being a bit more intentional about when you carry yarn and when you switch to a new bobbin makes a big difference to how tidy the back of your work looks. If you’re ever unsure, my color change tutorial walks through how I approach this and when it makes sense to start a new bobbin instead of pulling yarn across from another section. I’ve linked the video in this weeks blog post if you want a refresher.

Colour inspiration for crochet is literally everywhere right now!🌸🧶 When flowers start appearing, take out your camera and start collecting. A quick photo of a colour combination that stops you — that’s all you need. Then go to your stash and match what you find. Suddenly you’re working with colours you’d never have reached for otherwise.🥰 Nature never gets it wrong.💕🌸 For more favorite colour mixing tips, comment SHADES and I’ll send you my free guide ❤️

Choosing colors for colorwork can feel like a bit of a guessing game. One little trick I love is looking at the yarn in black and white. It takes the color away and lets you see the contrast instead. And in colorwork, contrast is what really makes the pattern come to life. Do I block my finished objects? Sometimes… but only if I think it needs it. These two shawls definitely benefited from it. The bat one to get the pointy shape to the edges, and the green one to show the lace pattern. It significantly increased the size of both items and made them look more “finished and professional “. Do I block socks? If they’re for me no I don’t. To gift or sell then yes I do. #blockingknitting #blockingcrochet #finishingtouches

How I switch colors in all my patterns based on linen (moss) stitch. 🍃 The first part is about joining new color, and switching colors after that is done in the same manner: - Work last st (partly) on WS over unused yarn; - Bring current yarn to front; - Finalize last st with second color; - Turn and work first st on RS over unused yarn. #crochet #crochetcolorwork #crochettutorial

You never really know which yarn you might need for a future design. A skein that quietly sits in your stash today might become the perfect match for a project months later. That’s why many designers keep a small library of yarns they love, different fibres, weights, and textures ready for swatching and experimentation. Sometimes the right yarn arrives in the mail. And sometimes it’s already been waiting in your stash all along. Yarn @expressionfiberarts #crochetdesigner #yarnstash #crochetdesignprocess #crochettips #crocheteducation
