I spent her last day by her side, hand-feeding her and giving her water, as she could no longer eat, drink on her own or walk more than a few steps... the pain medication was no longer helping and it was heartbreaking to see her suffering... she was exhausted and ready to grow her wings 🪽
the vet came and confirmed what we already knew in our hearts... the kindest thing we could do was let her go... she was released from her pain surrounded by love, kisses, and sliced carrots (her fave)
I now have her beautiful ponytail as a keepsake, and a willow tree has been planted above her resting place 🌿
thank you for bringing us so much joy over the years lil Willow... we are going to miss your little neighs, squeals and cheeky personality
I hope there’s an endless supply of carrots and apples in mini horse heaven 🐴🥕🍎
as hard as the cycle of life and death can be, the love and joy our animals bring into our lives while they’re here, makes every hard moment worth it 🙏🏻

Fleet
March 1998 – March 2026
Last weekend was my last weekend with my boy.
Fleet came into my life when he was still beside his mom — a little foal who hadn’t even finished nursing yet. He stayed with me his entire life.
For nearly three decades he was a foundation of the ranch — the dad to most of our herd, a protector, a big goof-ball, and my steady companion through more of my life than I can even put into words.
Fleet always knew when I still had treats in my pocket… even when I thought I had hidden them.
He also had a remarkable talent for getting himself into situations that only patience (and sometimes a Jeep) could solve.
One time he rolled and somehow got his legs straight through a plank fence. He waited calmly while I slid what I called my “magic carpet” underneath him and slowly pulled him out with my old CJ-Jeep like a round bale.
Another time he got himself hung up in a brand new barbed wire fence with his back legs in the air. We had to cut the fence out from under him like we were diffusing a bomb. He didn’t panic. He just stayed still and trusted us.
That was Fleet.
Patient. Smart. A little mischievous. Completely himself. A big ham.
When he was younger I could hop on him bareback anytime out in the field. He never lived in a stall.
Many mornings before heading to the emergency department I’d scan the pasture. If I couldn’t see Fleet, I knew he had likely gotten himself into some kind of bind and was patiently waiting for me to sort it out.
He was my boy. My big handsome boy.
More than half my life.
And the heart of this ranch.
I will miss him forever.
“Some horses pass through our lives.
Some become part of our soul.”
Thank you to Cherie, who cared for Fleet so beautifully at RBR and helped him reach 28 years, ensuring his final moments were peaceful.

HAThis week has been and will continue to be a heavy week.
It’s funny how the universe works.. Tuesday morning I found our eldest horse.. Kane.. passed away. It looks like he laid down.. and just went to sleep. No signs of struggle.. no signs of pain. He just left.. to create another sunrise for us here at home.
Kane was about 30 years old.. he came to us in 2023… so very fearful and neglected. Kane was never a cuddle bug.. but he showed his love and appreciation in different ways. In how he always looked for cookies.. or just gave these long.. deep stares.. and to watch him nap.. was the greatest gift of all.
Kane had been on my radar through the winter months.. I was ready for the day he told me.. he was done.. but instead he just rallied harder. Sunday afternoon I literally said out loud.. “Kane is doing so good.. he’s never looked better”… and then bam.
But maybe that’s how he wanted it.. to go out on his terms.. in an almost healed body.. with some fresh tootsies after his farrier visit last week.
Just the other morning we watched the sunrise together. I was humming to myself.. and Kane stood next to me. It was a perfect moment… one that I will hold onto forever.
Even though I knew.. his time wouldn’t be forever.. it still left my world a little shocked.. and my heart extra sore.
In addition.. tomorrow we have a big vet day to help another kiddo pass over… which was something I was already preparing for this week.
So right now.. my love tank is very empty..
but I believe in and love what I do so much. It is an honor to be their bridge from this world to the next.

FRYesterday we had to say goodbye to our beautiful Aladdin.
After an exhaustive attempt to help him, he only continued to decline and his pain increased. We made the decision to trailer him home from the vet clinic. With double the pain meds he got to spend time with his herd, got groomed, had snacks and spent some quiet time with Montana. He was then laid to rest with his beloved Montana by his side.
He came to us in 2021. He was saved from certain death after he was dropped off at an auction with a group of cows after the auction season in the fall of 2020.
He was a toothless senior that needed a special diet. We stepped up and offered to foster him. He worked his way deep into our hearts and never left.
At first he really wanted nothing to do with humans but with gentle kindness we were able to gain his trust. And with that trust we were able to find a soul that wanted to be loved and who bonded with us and his horse friends.
He was spicy but also sweet and loving. If he did not like something you knew it!
He was deeply loved, will be missed terribly and will forever be remembered.

HOFor Classic
These days are the worst, and this one hit really hard.
On Monday morning, we had to say goodbye to Classic. Nothing traumatic happened. He wasn’t sick. It was simply the slow, insistent passage of time that wore his body out. There was nothing more to do but let him go.
From the moment he came to Hoof & Paw, he lived. In the beginning, he loved hanging out with his best buddy Snooze. They roamed, grazed, and napped in the warmth of the afternoon sun. Those two were always together. Side by side.
It was hard on him when Snooze passed away. He had to make new friends and it wasn’t easy. He struggled. But life has this magical way of working out sometimes. Not too long after, in came our four minis. They were exactly what he needed.
They reignited his sense of purpose and he spent the remainder of his life fussing over them like a protective mother hen. He did his job well. Even in his final moments, he made sure they were okay.
Classic certainly lived up to his name. He was one of a kind. There will never be another like him and how lucky we were to have him here for as long as we did.
Right now our hearts are broken. We’ll sure miss him, but he will never be forgotten. He will always be one of ours.
When Classic came to Hoof & Paw, he was like a crabby old man. And when he left Hoof & Paw, he was an older, even crabbier old man. At least he was consistent!
Now that he’s with all the others who have gone before, I picture him running across an emerald green pasture with his best friend, Snooze—no hitch on his right side, no scratches on his back legs, a mouth full of perfectly aligned teeth, and all the graham crackers he can handle!
We sure love you, Classic, and we’ll see you again one day! ❤️

HAI’ve been witnessing tiny miracles here for a long time.. but I’ve also missed out on a bunch cause I was moving so fast. Now I really watch…
I’ve noticed Nancy watching baby Greta.. Rosie and Pie. I can tell by Nancy’s udder that she’s had many foals throughout her lifetime.
I truly believe these workhorses want to be with their kind. Maybe it’s from working as a team their entire lives.. or just having the mutual understanding of what their lives consisted of.. and that’s why we are bonds form so quickly.
Well today I was cleaning Nancy’s paddock.. and I couldn’t find her. It wasn’t until I heard a light snore.. that I rounded the corner and found her nestled next to Rosie, Greta and Pie’s barn. This is the first time I’ve seen her lay down.
Perhaps this is the first family that won’t be taken away from her..and she wanted to guard them to make sure they weren’t leaving.
I get choked up just rewatching this.
Safe at last old girl.. safe at last.
Greta has no idea how protected she is ❤️

THArthur’s story starts with us back in November of 2024. We found him at Bowie livestock auction- skinny, starving, actively going blind & searching for human interaction.
He met us with such gentle kind energy. His spirit was not broken, he was just lost on where he was. We are so blessed to have crossed paths with his old soul.
Upon his intake into our rescue, we found out he was about 31 years old, he had been a kids camp horse still was wearing shoes on his feet, just SO skinny. He is a big guy standing at 16 hands with a draft horse like build.
We have had a SUPER last year & 1/2 with him. Full of love, endless food, friends & of course many naps.
-the last few months Arthur has not been his same self… he has lost appetite resulting in weight loss, he doesn’t want as much attention- sort of distancing himself from us. We knew his time was getting close.. this week our veterinarian had “that” talk with us. The talk all horse owners dread. Quality of life.
We are true believers in letting them go as themselves. Not too far gone. Not a day too late. Today heaven gained a true angel, a once in a life time gentle handsome man.
Arthur, we will miss your gentle whinny walking into the barns. We will watch over your best friend Henry. Please watch down on us too. We love you ✨ 🕊️ 🌈

For almost 20 years, Moo has been a fixture here at the farm - while we’re heartbroken that he’s joined the others in pony heaven, we’re so grateful for the many years we had him. He was one in a million.
