I’ve been stitching almost daily since the beginning of 2020. Initially, I started it as a simple way to stay creative and pass the time while traveling. Then I discovered it to be a great stress reliever during the pandemic, and then I found I missed stitching after every piece I finished. As I focus on making repetitive, even stitches, I’m distracted from the outside world and feel calmer.I often stitch in the evening as a way to wind down from the intensity of the days news. When I engage in stitching solely as a form of active meditation, I make an effort to refrain from putting pressure on myself to produce something aesthetically pleasing or meaningful. That kind of self imposed pressure is a creativity killer. I try to be playful and experiment, and push back against the desire to let the work be too precious. I’m willing to make mistakes because that’s when I learn the most! After all it’s easy to pull out threads if you don’t like the way something looks. I’m always interested in the mechanics of stitching and sewing. How we all hold our hands, our needles, our fabric. How we move and shift. How we approach each stitch, and change in angle, line, shape, colour…. Anyway just one of the things I think about while I’m sitting with my daily stitching practice. Part of the process, for me, is the thinking, the pondering, the analysing of it. And part is just the doing of it. The being of it, with it. This is sped up 1.5 times simply to fit within the time constraint of how long our short attention spans watch something 😔 But the doing, the stepping away from the technology, the holding tactile textile in our hands - that’s the real power isn’t it. This is a little section of part of my upcoming project for Making Zen. If you want to join the waitlist I’ll send you an email when you can register for the free online event. The link is in my bio for that.

What does Zen meditation have to do with knitting, sewing, and the quiet work of our hands? A conversation with Rev. Tenku Ruff about stitches, attention, and the practice of presence. . I’ve been thinking about this connection for years. I’m so grateful to Tenku for sharing her wisdom with me. And I am excited to share an excerpt from our conversation. These stitches aren't straight. The tension is uneven. The line wandered. And I love it. Because this piece was made on a hard day, with tired hands, by someone who showed up anyway. Creativity doesn't ask for perfection. It only asks you to begin. If you've been waiting until you're good enough — you already are. 💬 Comment STITCH for the free Stitch 10 Minutes a Day guide. #slowstitching #threads4healing #imperfectandbeautiful #creativewomen #slowliving

If your thread keeps tangling while you stitch… this tiny preparation step may change everything. Before beginning a sashiko or embroidery project, it helps to prepare your skein of thread so it stays smooth and easy to work with. Many stitchers gently turn the skein into a simple braid. This keeps the thread organised, prevents tangles, and makes it easier to pull the exact length you need whilst stitching. Start by opening the skein into a loop and laying it flat. Then divide the thread into a few sections and gently braid them together, just like a soft plait. Tie the end loosely so the braid holds its shape. Now your thread stays neat, calm, and ready whenever you need a new length. It’s a small, mindful step before the first stitch (although it often makes the whole stitching experience feel more peaceful). 🧵Share this with a friend who might enjoy this simple stitching ritual. #zenstitching #slowstitching #sashikostitching

Some of you may remember my Playful Studies in Shape and Stitch workshop from the Making Zen event last October. I’m happy to say that the full video tutorial is now available to purchase, so if you missed the event you can now explore it at your own pace. This workshop focuses on taking one simple shape and exploring different ways of presenting it through stitch, using the formal elements. You will play with line, space and gradient to see how subtle shifts can completely change the feeling of a piece. Beyond the Surface: Weaving Life’s Wrinkles "Every time a thread passes through a plain piece of fabric, wrinkles are formed. To me, these threads represent the various events of life—the joys, the sorrows, and the quiet moments in between. The wrinkles they weave are not flaws; they are a beautiful testament to a life lived, one stitch at a time." #SlowStitch #ZenMeditation #FiberArt #LifePhilosophy #EmbroideryTherapy
