THThe truth is we all mess up, not just when we are beginners, all the time.
And honestly, that doesn’t go away no matter how long you’ve been sewing.
I still mess things up. I still sew things wrong, have to rip seams, start over, and figure it out as I go.
That’s not failure, that’s the progress.
Somewhere along the way, we start thinking we’re supposed to get it right the first time.
Like mistakes mean we’re not good at it. That’s just not true. The people who get better are the ones who keep going anyway.
So if you’ve been hesitating to start something because you’re afraid of messing it up, this is your sign to just go for it. Try it. Learn from it. Do it again.
You’re not behind. You’re not bad at this. You’re just in the middle of learning, exactly where you’re supposed to be.

BEZippers really out here ruining people’s confidence for no reason.
I have seen so many bagmakers confidently sew an entire bag and then get to the zipper like this is where my villain origin story begins.
And then when they finish they’re not even sure what went wrong. The tabs disappeared. The lining feels baggy. The zipper looks… fine… but not nice.
That’s usually when they find me.
Because I am very much a we are not letting a 9 inch piece of nylon defeat us today kind of teacher.
So I make a big deal about the small stuff in my patterns. Things like how I keep zipper tabs standing proud instead of getting eaten by the seam. How I baste first so the zipper behaves. How I slightly adjust lining seam allowances so the inside looks neat and snug instead of like it gave up halfway through.
Those are the things that usually make someone say wait… why does this one actually look good?
That’s why my patterns are full of color photos and little notes explaining what actually matters, because I want it to feel like I’m sitting next to you saying ok this is the part everyone struggles with, here’s how we fix it.
Because zippers are not hard. They’re just badly explained most of the time.

SPMy go-to method for finishing a zipper end for bags and pouches. Using a lighter to melt the last half-inch of the zipper edges right-sides-together creates that 90° end that keeps the zipper pull on, and buries the raw end into the seam allowance.
When I first started making bags I would sew the ends but that was time consuming and way too fiddly, so I came up with this technique which is much faster. I added the pliers after a few burnt fingertips 😅
