ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) is an evidence based therapeutic modality that helps us redirect our energy from fighting what is a natural human response (pain) and instead using that energy to build a life full of meaning and purpose. A lot of the work done in ACT is in confronting the many ways we have learned to avoid our pain that at the end of day only add to our suffering. I absolutely love ACT. It has made a huge difference in my own life and I have seen it help many clients who have felt stuck fighting back against their thoughts and emotions, unsure how to move forward. Here are a few things I might say in session that come from an ACT perspective. Acceptance can be one of the hardest lessons we learn. It was definitely one of mine. In a recent interview, Julia Roberts said it beautifully once you accept yourself as you are, and your past as it is, something shifts. The negative loops lose their grip. You stop trying to rewrite what can’t be changed, and instead you find tools that help you move forward with peace. For me, learning to accept “what is” was life-changing. It meant detaching from control, letting go of striving, and trusting that all things work together for good. That’s when a deep inner peace finally came, and life started to look clearer through a better lens. A lot of us seem to want self-forgiveness, and it’s my most requested and viral topic. To forgive yourself begins with accepting and committing to yourself, so apply ACT principles to your life to start. Here is how you can do so: 🧘🏼‍♀️ Practice self-awareness: notice your feelings and thoughts without changing or judging them. Be mindful and aware to understand. 😁 Practice acceptance: be present with your thoughts without resisting and acknowledge any discomfort that may arise. 👎🏼 Distance from negative thoughts: realize thoughts are not facts and what you do matters more than what you think. 🏃‍♀️ Commit to action: set small, achievable goals on what you want to work on and take action to commit to yourself. ❤️ Practice self-compassion: maintain a compassionate attitude towards yourself especially during challenging times. 🤯 reflect and adjust: reflect on your thoughts, emotions, and actions and see if you agree with what you’re doing or not, then adjust if needed. It is important to realize that to accept and to agree are not the same thing. You should accept that you lied to someone as it happened, but it doesn’t mean you agree it should be done again. And you commit to yourself to set the changes you want to see. By integrating these principles into your life, you can effectively apply ACT to heal your inner child and build a strong, loving relationship with yourself.
