Heritage language maintenance begins much earlier than we thought, with identity, sense of belonging, and everyday choices.
For many 1.5–2nd generation families like ours, this looks like acculturation:
not choosing between “heritage” or “Western,” but intentionally blending both.
Keeping what grounds us. Adopting what serves us. And offering our child the best of both worlds.
Language grows most naturally when culture is already valued, when it lives in food, symbols, rituals, celebrations, and stories… long before a child can speak.
That’s why I believe heritage language isn’t something we add on later.
It’s something we grow into, together, as a family.
If this resonates, I’ve turned part of this celebration into a free editable template for families who want to make culture visible in everyday moments — baby showers, birthdays, or gatherings that matter.

JEThis might be a hot take, but I think that it's fairly obvious:
Christmas is a Christian holiday.
If you celebrate it in the diaspora as a social holiday for the purpose of belonging, that is an act of acculturation.
If you celebrate it in the diaspora because it is forced upon you, be it because of work or holidays or School festivals, that is forced assimilation.
If you celebrate it in Israel as a Jew, that is the result of successful assimilation to Christian norms.
I have amazing memories of celebrating Christmas with my parents. Of continuously buying my father the exact same gifts: a fluffy robe and a pair of slippers. Memories of waking up early to discover what was beneath the tree, and as a family knitting while listening to the latest Jim Butcher on audio tape. Of opening up the newest Harry Potter book and my father starting to read it as we did puzzles or painted or knit. I remember my father caught a photo of Santa Claus running out of the house because he couldn't use magic when people could see him. It was a Polaroid and I do believe my parents still have it.
I also remember Christmas Mass. I remember trying to do Christmas without family after I moved out of my family home. I remember inviting friends over for a Chrismakkah party... and it really just being a Christmas party that I planned as a Jew.
My father was determined to raise Jews, as a respect to my mother who valued it and made it a condition. And he succeeded where many many people fail... and in doing so, he also raised children that valued holidays for what they were, not simply social Gatherings around specific times, but the very explicit religious or cultural reasons behind them. And he made it so that, for me, these Traditions that he brought into the family from him are tied explicitly to him. I will celebrate Christmas with my father, but without him it is a holiday that is incredibly Christian and does not at its core align with who I am.
I think my father's influence is something to be studied, he broke the odds along with my mother, and raised Jewish children. They raised Jewish children without a Jewish community. They raised Jewish children who live in Israel.
