He had hoped for a son, and Ada’s birth disappointed him. Their marriage lasted just over a year, and Ada never met her father. To counteract what she saw as Ada’s „dangerous“ inheritance from Byron, her mother emphasized a strict education in music, French, and especially mathematics — a subject Ada grew to love. In 1833, Ada Lovelace met mathematician Charles Babbage, who had designed a calculating machine called the Difference Engine. Inspired by his prototype, Ada became his lifelong friend and collaborator. Babbage soon moved on to a more ambitious project — the Analytical Engine, an early mechanical computer. In 1843, Ada translated a French paper by Italian mathematician Luigi Menabrea about the Analytical Engine. She also added thousands of words of her own notes. In her notes, Ada realized that the machine could carry out complex sequences of operations — far beyond simple calculations. One example she wrote — how to compute Bernoulli numbers — is considered by computer historians to be the first computer program. Even more visionary, Ada suggested the machine could work not just with numbers but with things like musical notes — foreseeing the idea of a general-purpose computer.
