SEAlterations & Repairs // Quarter Zip to Full Zip Alteration
Today's video we go over how to convert a quarter zip to a full zip on a stretch knit jacket without a lining and one front pocket into two pockets. Typically you would sandwich the zipper between the outer fabric and the lining fabric but when you don't have a lining fabric what do you do?!
We can do this 1 or 3 ways!
1- We create a facing by taking fabric away from the jacket edge making the jacket smaller. This method works if the jacket is several sizes too big. If not I would not recommend doing this.
2- We source a fabric that has similar stretch and color to make a facing out of. This is the more costly method since this is more time for me to source multiple fabrics to choose the best one and then buy enough to make a facing. This is recommended for heriloom and vintage pieces.
3-We put the zipper in with two lines of stitching and leave it exposed. The zipper ribbon itself is tightly woven and won't unravel on its own. Covering the zipper is purley for asthetic reasons and to make the garment look more professional. Function wise an exposed zipper works the exact same way!
The third way is how we chose to do this. The total cost for this was 25 dollars as there were no sequins, lace or trimming that needed to be removed and put back on. To make a facing from the jacket (way 1) would start at 50 dollars and to source a fabric to make a facing (way 3) would cost 75+ depending on jacket material and facing fabric cost.
