The current episode of the Huberman Lab podcast out now is about music and the brain, including how listening to particular types of music can shift our internal state, such as our mood and our level of motivation, as well as our ability to better focus and learn new material. Indeed, listening to her playing music can actually enhance our capacity for brain rewiring (neuroplasticity). I explain how in the episode.

Studies exploring which kind of music is most effective in shifting us out of states of unwanted sadness, and towards states of more happiness, reveal that it takes about nine minutes of listening to upbeat music to shift our mood in a pervasive way.

Keep in mind that scientific studies need to pick up particular threshold, but that’s not an absolute value and of course context matters. That said, it’s informative to know that if you’re trying to shift your mood with music, it may be useful to give it at least nine or 10 minutes.

During the episode I also describe studies exploring how listening to sad music when one is already sad can exert a cathartic role— helping us move through those states as well.

The point is that sometimes we need to immerse ourselves in an emotion, whereas other times we need to shift our emotional state in order to continually achieve mental health and that music is a potent tool to do that, but it’s not instantaneous; give it ~9min or more.
