Had to show off my new walking legs🦿 & i accidentally created a loop👀 I am so thankful for my afos & knee braces, they significantly help my joint stability. Although they aren’t the most comfortable, i am so grateful that they help me walk, stand, & dance just a little bit longer & safer🖤 still, i really should have stretched before kicking my leg up behind me oops…. I also want to share that I have a dynamic disability & was privileged enough to be able to film this on a good symptom day :) #heds #ehlersdanlossyndrome #ambulatorywheelchairuser #afo

I wear AFO braces every day. I don’t wear them to help me walk or stand. I mainly wear them to prevent contractures. They do help with transfers though. My braces have a separate foam liner that goes into the hard shell. My braces are also designed with a carbon fiber insert to prevent breaking. They have 4 straps for extra support and stability. My neurodegenerative disease causes excess tone and rapid developing contractures. I have had many surgeries on my feet due to this. #AFOs #disability #wheelchair #fyp #medicallycomplex

AFOs are getting smaller & KAFOs are a little challenging. But we will be incorporating the KAFOs more because the way she twist her knee like that makes me so uncomfortable- she’s not a fan of her KAFOs, they’re heavier, their harder to move with but I know with time she’ll feel more comfortable 🥹💖 #babyazari #spinabifida #afos #kafos #anaxibarra

Why does she walk like that? What wrong with her feet? These are some of the most common questions that pop up on my videos of my daughter. So I figured I'd try my best to answer it and hopefully educate people in the process. Immy is 15 years old. She is autistic but she also has hypermobility Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. She was diagnosed by a geneticist in late 2023 after years of trying to figure out what was happening with lots of different symptoms. Ehlers Danlos Syndrome is the name given to a group of genetic conditions that affect connective tissue. There are different types but hEDS is the most common. It can cause flexible joints, issues with the skin such as easy scarring and poor healing, bleeding tendencies and even issues with the bowel, bladder and even heart. For my daughter it is mainly her legs that are affected and over time her feet have become more outwardly turned. Her tendons and muscles are now so tight she physically cannot move them back into a neutral position. We are waiting for further test results to work out a plan moving forward which is highly likely to involve invasive surgery. This hasn't been helped by repeated failings by our local orthotics services. She should wear splints but has been left now for 12 months without a pair, in which time the condition has become worse. We've even ended up in hospital due to ankle injuries. The condition causes pain on a regular basis (try walking like she does for more than a minute and you'll see what I mean) But she never lets anything stop her. She radiates positivity, bright energy and she very rarely complains. I hope that answers most people's questions but if it hasn't please leave us a comment and I'll do my very best to answer them. #ehlersdanlossyndrome #heds #hypermobility #hypermobilityehlersdanlossyndrome #mobilityissues #disabled #disabledchild #disability #disabledcommunity #splints #afos #parentcarer

Come with me to get my AFO Leg Braces!❤️ As some of you may know from reading my “About” on my website, I am chronically ill and disabled and use a wheelchair part-time, so today was very exciting to be able to get these AFOs and finally hopefully be able to walk/stand without pain! I’m so excited and wanted to share this with you all so that if even 1 person watching has or is going to get orthotics, you’re not alone❤️ - I teach early learning skills in a low-stimulation style which is perfect for babies and toddlers. The link to my full videos are on my YouTube channel linked in my bio! Piper: And it went like this! My girl has been working really hard in neurological rehabilitation! Recently she has started to use a zero gravity harness and treadmill system that has allowed her to walk with just holding on! The system can take up to 100% of my girl’s weight off of her so she can focus on moving her legs and walking despite her muscle weakness from her hypokalemic periodic paralysis. She feels like an astronaut! The physical therapist noticed that my girl has foot drop and that her feet are also moving inwards while trying to walk and getting in her way. At first, the therapist tried to correct my girl’s walking with her hands. This is a big perk of this system, with all of the help it supplies, the therapist can focus on helping my girl in other ways. My girl’s foot drop and walking corrections that she required wound up being too big and the therapist gave bracing a try. Voila! It was like a walk in the park! My girl started walking smoothly! Braces are just what she needs and next week she has an appointment with orthotics to get her very own pair of AFO (ankle foot orthosis) braces fitted! One thing is for sure, my girl is making some big strides!

👀 I MADE YOU LOOK 👀 Even though this reel is partly a joke, ever since getting AFOs (to help my legs be straighter when I run) I feel like I’m getting stared at constantly (to be fair they do make an annoying noise when I walk 😂). But to be honest, despite getting a few stares (one captured at the end of this video- sorry if you’re that person), I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how people can learn to mind their own business 🙃 So with International Day of People with a Disability tomorrow, this is your reminder that people with a disability may or may not use all kinds of mobility aids and devices to help them, but chances are they’re probably tired of people staring so please don’t ✌🏼🏃🏽‍♀️ (insert AFO emoji here) #CerebralPalsy #ParaAthletics #AFO #Disability #IMadeYouLook #ButDontStare 🤣
