The African rock python is the largest snake in Africa. It can reach 6 m in length and weigh 50 kg but the average is 2.5 to 5 m. With mottled shades of brown and disruptive markings it is perfectly camouflaged for a wide range of habitats, such as savanna, grassland, semi-desert, and rocky areas. The African rock python is non-venomous although it does have sharp recurved teeth which it uses for getting a good grip on its prey. Long-lived, it can reach 30 years old. This one was found swallowing an adult female impala. 🎥 @francoisfouriewildlife — Follow @paythepoachers to learn more about African wildlife and support our mission to transform poachers into wildlife protectors. — #wildlifeconservation #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature #conservation

Incredible! African Rock python hunting. ¡Increíble! Caza de pitones rocosas africanas. The African Rock Python is a remarkable predator, exhibiting fascinating behaviors shaped by strength, stealth, and adaptability. First, it relies on ambush tactics, lying in wait near waterholes or animal trails to capture unsuspecting prey. Second, this python can constrict animals much larger than itself, using powerful coils to immobilize and suffocate. Third, it demonstrates patience and energy conservation, often remaining motionless for hours before striking. Fourth, its diet is highly varied, ranging from small mammals and birds to antelopes and even crocodiles. Fifth, African Rock Pythons play an important ecological role, controlling populations of prey species and maintaining balance in their habitats.

Play The Long Game 📽 by @grant_rat African rock python killed a steppe buzzard On the off chance that it wasn’t obvious, this is not what these pythons typically eat. African rock pythons show a heavy preference for medium sized mammals, like monkeys, hares, etc. The large ones will even go after young antelopes if they can get to them while their parents aren’t watching. If you're wondering how this might happen, I can give you a semi-educated guess: Pythons can lay completely still for days. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it's true. This is a key part of their hunting strategy. It was likely chilling in a semi-coiled position up in that tree for who knows how long. Watch the beginning of the video again. At first glance its difficult to tell the tree from the snake. It's highly likely that the buzzard had the same issue when it landed in this tree. With the python already in striking position, it just had to wait for the buzzard to get within its kill zone, which is roughly 2 meters from where it was. I do not suspect it had to wait very long - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Nature Is Metal is powered by you! A rock python moves slowly after eating its prey because its stomach is very full. Since it swallows animals whole, the big meal makes it heavy and slow. This is the time the snake usually hides to digest its food safely.
