We love cultural history that inspires us to celebrate our multitudinous heritages as Black Indigenous and Afro-Indigenous peoples. This Native American Heritage Month we’re out to uplift and celebrate ALL our Indigenous kin. We’re living for this video by Cherokee and Lenape creator Mia, and want to know what nations y’all are representing! Brown people are the indigenous people and first inhabitants of America. Our bloodline goes back thousands of years before any European or African person set foot here. Any refusal of this fact is anti-indigenous and anti-critical thinking. Note: This doesn’t mean that Afro Indigenous, Euro Indigenous, or Asian Indigenous people don’t exist or are not valid. Mixed race people have a right to claim their ancestries. #indigenouserasure #nativeerasure #afrocentrism #blackwashing #indigenousresistance #indigenous #indigenouspeople #native #nativeamerican #nativeamericanheritagemonth #mesoamerican #mesoamerica #africansarentafrican #theycamebeforecolumbus ##africansamericansareafrican #coppercolored #aboriginal #aborigine #aboriginalamerican #aboriginalamericans #mayans #olmec #olmecheads #aztec #firstamericans #originalamericans

Happy #IndigenousPeoplesDay ✊🏾 Thousands of people in the United States identify as Black-Indigenous or Afro-Indigenous. The histories of Black and Indigenous peoples in the US are interwoven yet the relationship is often ignored and rarely taught. The Afro-Indigenous community often faces issues like colorism and the erasure of their identities. Afro-Indigenous Activist Kara Roselle Smith @kararoselles educates her followers on both aspects of her identity as a member of the Chappaquiddick Wampanoag of the Wampanoag Nation, a people who are from an island now well known as Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts. Kara’s mom, Alma Gordon, is African-American and Indigenous, while Smith’s father is African-American. Kara’s mom, Alma, who had previously served as the tribal historian, started getting more involved in the tribe in the mid to early 2010s before starting her role as the Sonksq (the word for a woman sachem, or chief) of the Chappaquiddick tribe. Editor’s note: This video first appeared on Kara’s TikTok in July 2022, in October 2022 Kara shared that her mother Alma, lost her fight to a progressive neurodegenerative disorder called Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) on September 29th, 2022. May she rest in peace. Follow @demandafrica and @africachanneltv across social media for African films, culture, education and more!

Fun fact I got this wrap “kimono” style shirt at the African American Culture Festival in Baltimore years ago when I was working on my research project. I was studying the relationship of Black people within the community and everyone was there. African American, East African, West African, Afro Indigenous, Black Israelites (🙄ifykyk) Biracial, Muslims, Christians, Atheists, the Queer, the Gay, the Homophobes. Twas cathartic honestly, even though my family I was staying with warned me about the dangers of going alone I still went and enjoyed myself and felt safe. Anyways I’ve worn this a lot and posted myself in it bc I love love Ankara fabric and the patterns. The woman was super talented too!
