ABHappy Wednesday with this scene from the film Aftersun, one of the nominees for Best Picture at the 2023 Oscars. This is one of the deepest and saddest scenes I have ever seen in a movie, leading to some of the film’s biggest revelations. The closing scene, just minutes after this one, might be one of the most intense and complex, stirring from the core that turmoil which transforms into anguished, reflective, and liberating tears.
What remains when everything that once was no longer exists? Relationships, feelings, frustrations, desires, aspirations, or indignations — moments that come and go with time, fading their colors and transforming perceptions. It is from this material, the fabric of memory, that the narrative of Aftersun is woven, a film written and directed by Charlotte Wells.
The title, very fitting, can be read and interpreted in two ways: it is both what comes after the sun — after the holidays, after the shock of reality, after everything that changed at the end of an idealized, yet no less real, period — and also the retrieval of what occurred until that departure, the anguished ending that silences as much as it distances, erasing the remnants of a stronger, deafening desire. It is about what was and what is no longer, about the longing that mixes with fantasy, about the lost memory that can never be recovered but, nonetheless, still holds value.
