JEAustralian Fashion Week often presents itself as a celebration of creativity and innovation but behind the scenes, it reinforces long-standing systems of whiteness, classism, and elitism. It’s not just about what you wear it’s about who you know, how you look, and where you come from.
BIPOC creatives are often invited for optics, not influence. Working-class voices are excluded from conversations shaping the industry. And real diversity? It’s still seen as risky.
Fashion should challenge the status quo, not replicate it in designer clothing. Until we address the structural gatekeeping that defines this space, inclusion will remain performative and temporary.
