Prompt engineering is going through a pretty big shift in 2026. The whole “find the magic words” era is winding down, and what’s replacing it looks a lot more like an actual back-and-forth with AI.
Anthropic’s new research on context engineering basically confirms this. As agents like Claude start taking on bigger, longer tasks, your job as the human stops being about crafting that one perfect prompt. It’s more about guiding the whole thing as it plays out.
Instead of endlessly tweaking your input, you’re now managing context, setting up good feedback loops, and keeping multi-step workflows pointed in the right direction.
And as these systems get more autonomous, the people getting the most out of them are probably the ones who can handle ambiguity and course-correct on the fly.
So is prompting less about writing prompts now, and more about just managing the AI?
