Did you know “no because” is more than just internet speak? It’s actually a new interjection! Linguists call it a discourse marker, and it’s being used to draw attention or hold space before making a point. It started in African American English and expanded into mainstream Gen Z speech. It's another cool example of language change. I learned about "no because" from @etymologynerd, author of the new book "Algospeak," which is a fascinating combination of how language intersects with social media algorithms. Listen to the whole interview in the Grammar Girl podcast tomorrow (Thursday, episode 1100) #NoBecause

Examples are editable so you can add / change anything. I’d challenge older groups of students to see if they can come up with some of their own examples with new trends and adjust before putting them up in your room 🙂‍↔️ #classroomdecor #classroomsetup #classroomideas #classroomposters #elateacher

Don’t always say that something is just okay or alright if you want to say that it isn’t good or bad! In today’s video, I share several alternatives to these common words that natives use in everyday conversations, and I’d love to see how you can use them in a sentence, so make sure to leave your own examples in the comments below! 😊 Take note of the following four words and phrases we can use to say that something is just okay or alright: 🔹serviceable = we can use this adjective to say that something can still be used and is functional, but it’s not great: I’d say my Japanese is serviceable because I can make basic conversation and ask people basic questions. 🔹get the job done = if something gets the job done, it’s good enough to serve its purpose: My camera isn’t the best one on the market, but it still gets the job done. 🔹meh = we use this informal interjection to express that we’re not interested in something or that we’re indifferent to something, and it’s often used as an adjective: I had some high expectations for a restaurant that a lot of people were telling me to try out, but the food ended up being pretty meh. 🔹nothing to write home about = we use this expression to say that something isn’t interesting or special: The view from the top of the mountain is pretty cool, but it’s nothing to write home about in my personal opinion. Now practice using these words and phrases in the comments below! 😊 . . . . . #esl #learnenglish #speakenglish #englishvocabulary #advancedenglish #languagelearning #eslteacher
