Founded in 2017 by former Samsung engineer June Paik, the company develops neural processing units designed specifically for AI inference—running models after they’re trained. At Stanford’s Hot Chips conference, Furiosa demonstrated their RNGD chip running Meta’s Llama model with more than twice the power efficiency of Nvidia’s hardware. The company, now valued at nearly $700 million, declined an acquisition offer from Meta last year. OpenAI and LG have both tested the chips, reporting strong performance. Microsoft is trying to break that dependency with their new custom chip called the Azure Maia 200. This hardware is built specifically to handle the heavy lifting for things like ChatGPT and Azure cloud services. By designing their own silicon they can make the whole process more efficient and stop paying such a premium to outside suppliers. This is not just about saving money for them. It is about creating a supply chain where they are in control. Everyone’s obsessing over how many transistors we can pack onto a chip. But almost nobody is asking: how do we stop these chips from destroying themselves? As AI accelerators push toward 1,000 watts, we’re hitting a physical wall: Heat Density. Silicon simply can’t pull heat away from tiny 100°C+ junctions fast enough. The fix researchers are racing toward? Synthetic Diamond. Through a process called “phonon transport,” diamond’s carbon lattice moves heat faster than any other solid, with thermal conductivities over 13x higher than silicon. Labs are now growing diamond layers directly onto wafers to keep the next generation of AI hardware from throttling out. Want to go deeper?
