This Made-In-India UAV flies at 20,000 feet. Arctus Aerospace has built a UAV called AX1 which is capable of flying at 20,000 feet with a 50 kg payload. On the 10th of April, 2026, Shreepoorna S Rao and the Arctus Aerospace team inaugurated the Arctus HQ in Bengaluru and unveiled their new UAV, the AX1. This is Arctus' first tech demonstrator unmanned aircraft. The AX1 has a 20,000 feet cruising altitude, a 50 kg max payload, and an endurance of 10 hours. Much of this developed was enabled by Bengaluru, which is an ecosystem that enables founders to go from concept to hardware at a very fast pace. They have access to high-quality engineers, suppliers, early customers, and capital all within a tight loop. Over the last few months, Arctus Aerospace has been heads down, designing, building, and testing, and Shreepoorna S Rao believes that the AX1 is a direct output of that process.

Arctus Aerospace has developed the AX1 long-endurance UAV for persistent, high-resolution Earth observation without any costly infrastructure. The deep-tech startup is focused on building next-generation aerial platforms for real-time geospatial intelligence. Founded around 2023–2024 by IITian Shreepoorna S. Rao, the Bengaluru-based company operates with a strong engineering-first approach, building its aircraft systems largely in-house. The founding vision behind Arctus Aerospace is rooted in a fundamental limitation of current Earth observation systems. Satellites, while powerful, are expensive and often suffer from low revisit frequencies, meaning they cannot continuously monitor a specific location. On the other hand, conventional drones lack the endurance and altitude required for large-scale observation. Arctus aims to overcome these limitations by developing high-altitude UAVs capable of delivering β€œzero-infrastructure Earth intelligence”, for continuous monitoring without reliance on ground installations. The AX1 is part of Arctus Aerospace’s broader initiative to build high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft. These systems are engineered to operate at altitudes of up to approximately 45,000 feet and remain airborne for nearly 24 hours. This capability places the AX1 in a unique operational niche, far above commercial drones yet significantly more flexible and cost-effective than satellites. One of the defining characteristics of the AX1 is its ability to carry substantial payloads, reportedly up to 250 kilograms. This allows the UAV to host a variety of advanced sensing technologies, including multispectral, hyperspectral, electro-optical (EO), infrared (IR), and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems.
