BAAlbert Bridge will be closed for up to a year, with plans to reopen to vehicles within 12 months, following approvals for a £8.5m repair job.
At a meeting last night (Wed 25 March), Kensington and Chelsea councillors said they are adamant Albert Bridge will not become another Hammersmith Bridge situation, which closed to motor vehicles in 2019. They approved plans for an £8.5m repair job, which is expected to take up to a year to complete.
The 153-year-old Grade II listed Albert Bridge closed to vehicles in February earlier this year after council engineers discovered cracks in a cast-iron abutment on the north-east side of the bridge’s support structure.
Around 15,000 vehicles are being diverted each day to neighbouring bridges Battersea Bridge and Chelsea Bridge. Kensington and Chelsea council have said they are continuing to explore a temporary fix to allow vehicles to use the bridge, but this is unlikely.
The repairs will be funded by Kensington and Chelsea council, with contributions sought from Transport for London and the Government.

STAlbert Bridge is currently closed to traffic due to issues with its structural integrity. But this is nothing new.

Built (1886–1894): Designed by Sir Horace Jones and Sir John Wolfe Barry to ease traffic while allowing tall ships to reach the busy Pool of London.
Architecture: A Grade I listed structure with a steel frame clad in Cornish granite and Portland stone, styled in Neo-Gothic to match the nearby Tower of London.
Dimensions: It is 244m long with two 65m-high towers.
Mechanism: It is a combined bascule and suspension bridge. The central "bascules" (French for "see-saw") pivot upwards to allow ships to pass.
Visiting the Attraction
You can walk across the bridge's road level for free, but a paid ticket grants access to the internal experience:
High-Level Walkways: Panoramic views 42m above the Thames.
Glass Floors: Dare to look straight down through 11.5m-long glass panels at the traffic and river below.
Victorian Engine Rooms: Discover the original steam engines and coal-fired boilers that powered the bridge until 1976.
Bridge Lifts: The bridge still opens about 800 times a year. You can check the official lift schedule to see the bascules in action.
Practical Information
Opening Times: Generally 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM daily (last entry 5:00 PM).
Getting There: A short walk from Tower Hill (District/Circle lines) or London Bridge (Northern/Jubilee lines and Rail) stations.
