The day octopus, with its speckled skin resembling a pointillist painting, utilizes pigment sacs under its skin to intensify or mute colors, adapting to its surroundings. This cephalopod, found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, can also change skin texture for camouflage. Despite their adaptability, these octopuses inhabit coral reefs facing significant threats. A recent UN report warns that if global temperatures rise to 2°C above preindustrial levels, coral reefs, including those hosting day octopuses, would largely vanish. Even with 1.5°C warming, up to 70% of reefs could face severe degradation by 2100.🐙 (Via: @ibrahim.elhariry )

Recent ethological studies have documented intriguing instances of interspecific aggression between octopuses (Octopus cyanea) and reef-associated fish species. Typically cooperative in joint hunting efforts, these partnerships—primarily observed between octopuses and groupers or other predatory fish—can also display signs of conflict. In a 2020 study published in Ecology, researchers observed octopuses striking fish with their arms during cooperative foraging events. These behaviors, often interpreted as punishment or assertion of control over access to prey, may serve to reinforce partner compliance or respond to perceived competition. The strikes were non-lethal but clearly intentional, suggesting a level of behavioural sophistication and strategic interaction. The aggressive interactions often occurred when a fish attempted to steal prey, blocked the octopus’s path, or disrupted the coordination of the hunt. In some cases, the octopus’s strikes led to temporary avoidance behaviours in the fish, implying a social cost to non-cooperative behaviour. This phenomenon illustrates the complexity of predator partnerships and suggests that even in mutualistic scenarios, conflict can arise, and behavioural enforcement mechanisms may evolve. These findings contribute to a growing body of research showing that octopuses, known for their problem-solving and individualistic behaviours, can engage in sophisticated inter-species social dynamics.

As the common reef #octopus (Octopus cyanea) moves across the coral reef, it uses chromatophores to change its coloring and appearance to match the substrate beneath. These color changes are sometimes created to mimic a dark shadow passing across the surface — in hopes that a crab may let its guard down and become a snack. 🐙 #ocean #science

This octopus sees danger coming… and turns into an entirely different animal. 🐙➡️🐍 The mimic octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus) lives on muddy, shallow seafloors in Indonesia and the Indo-Pacific. When threatened, it doesn’t just hide—it shape-shifts. By changing color, posture, and how it arranges its arms, it can imitate venomous animals like sea snakes, lionfish, and flatfish. Here, it lifts two striped arms, presses them together, and waves them like a banded sea krait, a highly venomous sea snake. Many predators recognize that pattern and quickly back off. Some wild facts: Discovered by science only in 1998 Can reach about 60 cm (2 ft) including arms Changes color and texture in less than a second using chromatophores Chooses different mimics depending on the type of predator This behavior evolved because the open sandy bottom offers little cover. Instead of hiding in coral, the mimic octopus builds a toolbox of illusions to stay alive. It isn’t formally assessed by the IUCN, but it depends on healthy coastal habitats—seagrass beds, mangroves, and soft-bottom areas that are threatened by pollution, trawling, and coastal development. Nature doesn’t need fantasy creatures. It already has a real, shape-shifting “sea snake” in disguise. Did you know ocotpus were this small in their larval stage? When they are young they live at the surface floating on debris & eating plankton until they are large enough to return to the reef. Sometimes we find them when removing trash from the ocean. This one was found floating on an old, adrift doritos bag. It was quickly removed & returned to the ocean on natural debris. 🐙💙 @kaimanaoceansafari #babyoctopus #octopus #ocean #marinedebris #cleanuptheocean #savetheocean
